What killed a U.S. tank?
On Aug. 28, 2003, an unknown munition, thought to be no wider than a pencil, pierced the side of an M1A1 Abrams tank on patrol in Baghdad. The round crippled the 69-ton vehicle and slightly injured its commander and gunner. It was the second Abrams knocked out of commission by the enemy in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Now Army officials are trying to figure out what kind of mystery projectile could pierce the Abrams armor and disable it.

That's pretty interesting. When I was in the Army and on the Abrams, we felt invincible.

Ditto... Nothing anyone else has, or can afford to make would go through
the turret(sp?) and that many things inside..

Strange is that the round or the mildly radioactive Urani particles would have been found inside the cab and that was not mentioned..

We have heat rod sabot rounds that would do this as well, but they would have burned up the cab vs bouncing around as this one did..

Depleted Uranium Rounds would do a lot more damage than that..Plus its in the lower side of the tank.....

depleted Unranium rounds do not ricochete..

Its an updated RPG if anything.. but to peirce that armor you would have to develop something with an EXTREMELY small surface area.. so while it may damage the tank.. the crew will probably be rarely if ever hurt.

In any case.. disabling an M1 with ANY hand held weapon is pretty damn amazing.

Yea......if you buy the whole story. I don't.

It doubt it would penetrate for 1 1/2" after ricocheting around in my opinion.

But then I'm not too interested in the story.

there was an article explaining what it was. It was a russian made RPG. I can't seem to locate the article though

Must have been a high velocity impact sabot. Whoever shot it also knew the thinnest part of the armor on the abrams. The m1a1b switched up to all ceramic reactive armor so it probably wouldn't have damaged a b model.
