so really, out of curiousity, why do people call themselves persian when its always been called iran? the europeans started calling them persian for whatever reason but the iranian government specified it to iran in the 1930s.

Because Iran used to be a part of Persia. Maybe blacks should start calling themselves Africans????? Chinese start calling themselves Mongolians ???

Actually it was Perisa loooooooooooooooong before it was Iran.

Damn, pick up a damn history book.

Many people in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Armeina, Georgia, Chechnia, Tajikistan and other nations have small Persian populations.

55% of Iranians are Persian and 25% are Azeri Turk.

Persia was the name for 6000 years.

Iran was installed as the official name in the 1950s because of the Ayran heritage of the Persian people.

thats just telling me that persia was around for 6000 years. its gone. why do people call themselves after a long gone country?

by the way, it was the 30s, not the 50s

great thing about posting on EF:

you ask a question, and not only is it answered, but you also get answers to other questions too...like 'am I dumb?'

thats what i love about you 2thick. once youre proven otherwise, you make smartass remarks :)

would it help if i simplify where im confused? the ottoman empire is gone. none of those countries call themselves ottoman anymore. the USSR is gone. none of those countries call themselves soviets anymore. why do people call themselves persians when the country has long been off the map

You are seriously one of the dumbest people on EF and that is not an easy accomplishment.

Read my posts. If you still cannot figure it out then run for president. Apparentkly being a retard is the only prerequisite (other than have a billionaire father who was head of the CIA).

The country has always been known to its own people as Iran (land of the Aryans), although for centuries it was referred to as Persia (Pars or Fars, a province in southern Iran) by the Europeans, mainly due to the writings of Greek historians. In 1935 the Government specified that it should be called Iran; however, in 1949 they allowed both names to be used.

Most people today, know Persia or Iran through its carpets, its caviar, its costly war with its neighbour Iraq, or through its importance as one of the world's major oil-producing nations. Yet, Persia has one of the richest and oldest cultures in the world

Nice summary, but Iranians used to call themselves Parsi before the name change.

Sometimes Germans can be Prussians, but Russians are never Prussians. Even though Kazakastanians claim to be Cossaks they are really Mongols driven from Istanbul.
