what do you all think? for the past maybe year-a year and a half i have been soda-free and JUST drinking water, water, and more water. But very recently i've been craving soda ALOT and have drank a can a day for the past week :worried: . i know...bad. But my Q is if i DO drink a can a day, will this ruin my results from my gym work? or will it totally ruin anything close to being called a diet?

incase it matters...usually drink: pepsi, mountain dew, or dr. pepper

It is not the carbination of the product which you need to be concerned with, rather the following ingredients:

phosphoric acid
potassium sorbate
sodium benzoate
sodium citrate
ascorbic acid

In the majority of products, diet brands will have a higher caffeine content than the regular brand.

The caffeine will create an acidic condition in the stomach which may lead to GI problems with higher consumption over longer periods of time. The phosphoric acid will lower the pH value of your saliva and in order for your body to compensate for this, it pulls calcium from bone (including teeth) to act as a buffer. The potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate are used as preserving agents against yeasts and fungi. The sodium citrate is used to keep the acidity level of the drink lower than it otherwise would be. The ascorbic acid is used as an anti-oxidant.

Sodas or diet-sodas have no nutritional value whatsoever and any calories which they may contain are classed as 'empty' ones. It just doesn't make sense to pay for and consume a product which has the potential to remove more from your body than it delivers.

Stick to water.

In the case of regular soft drinks, add all of the above to the following:

Pepsi (1 can): 41.6 g of sugar
Mountain Dew (1 can): 46.5 g of sugar
Dr Pepper (1 can): 37 g of sugar

These sugars will then cause an insulin spike which may result in your body storing fat. Anything in moderation is fine but, in the case of sodas, they are more trouble than they are worth.

I just drink diet soda. No calories! I actually prefer it to regular now. Doesn't leave that nasty stickiness in your mouth. Water is still king, of course.

If you can I'd suggest staying away....

kian knows his shit.

But I also wouldn't beat myself up over it...especially if your still in a calorie deficit at the end of the day...

Also, try to drink it for lunch rather than later in the evening.

my .02 cents

i drink many, many "sodas", as you Mayberry types refer to it. also, i am a collosal fat ass.

Just drink diet soda. It should be obvious to anyone that consuming 40g of sugar in a small time frame is not the the brightest thing to do unless it's post workout (but please don't drink pop post workout, get some dextrose :) )
