A question about racism

Have any of you been subjected to blatant racism to your face?

I'm not talking about being a victim of affirmative action or anything like that. I am talking about going into a store, restaurant, or other places, and been treated differently?

I worked at Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta as a kid. (14-16)

I was called white boy, devil, cracker. I was pused around and intimidated by black guys who were mad at the system. They were grown men.

my reply is a FIRM yes.

my girlfriend and her mother went into a restraunt one time on their way to visit me, el paso to lubbock. they went in, sat down, and no one acknowledged their presence. they wouldn't serve them.
but they handled it well. they just went somewhere else. they wouldn't tell me the name of the place, and i swear to God if i ever find out i will go burn it down.
this happened in 2001. i couldn't believe it.

bottom line is it is stupid.. all of it.
But as long as WE (blacks, whites, yellows, browns) let racial slurrs strike anger in us.. then racisim beats all of us.

:lmao:

now that's an excellent way to deal with it.

I once never got waited on waiting to get shoes at a mall in NC. I was the only white guy in there.
I'm totally gonna drive back there and burn the place down.

that will totally teach them.

i never said it was an 'excellent', or the right way to deal with it. but i'm bigoted against stupid people, and they're stupid, so it would make me feel better to rid the world of their ignorance.

I have had....

1) A woman refuse to wait on me in a restaurant because I was with a black lady.

2) A man suddenly not have any vacancies in his motel because he thought I was Jewish because of my last name. He had rooms until I gave him my credit card with my name on it.

I have faced it. I have seen the hurt in someone's eyes when they are treated differently. I have felt the pain in my heart from being treated differently. I can deal with the pain that I feel, because I understand that some people are ignorant. I just have a hard time seeing other's being treated that way.

I lived there for many years plus I go down 4-5 months a year. So, yes I do know a lot about it.

so what did I say that has ONE single thing to do with the KKK

are you familiar with pre-judging somthing. To make a decision before you know the facts. It is called prejudice.

My father made the same assumptions until he had to take to to the ER with a head contusion .. cause I got a raise.

My Freshman year in college I moved into a large dorm and had a roommate whom I didn't know just based on room assignments. He was a white guy from Missouri City near Houston. We got along OK until his Mom came up to visit. She requested to the Dorm administration that he be given a new roomate. It didn't happen, but it made me uncomfortable as hell.

That is my most memorable.

that is fucked up!!
A kid I was friends with in elementary school named David Williams took me home to meet his family. They were nice. Later he told me his mom did not like him hanging out with white boys.

Too late, it's out of business.

There is a difference between being discriminated against and racism.

I faced discrimination all the time when I rode my Harley. Places that wouldn't allow you to stay, local police that kept an eye on you when you were in their town, etc., but that doesn't affect you the same as when someone treats you differently because of your race, religion, etc.. Racism does something to your psyche, it makes you feel less about yourself.

Hell, I totally understand what the mother was feeling. I wouldn't want my son to room with a Republican, either.

it is hard to say if I got my ass kicked pretty much everday of my life until 8th grade or so because I was white, because I was poor, or if it was just because I was tall and skinny so that I stood out.
whatever it was, it sure makes me want to burn things.

hell, i would just burn you all, except for ttlpkg (we're both from austin) and you HS because you make me laugh.

It only does that if you let it. I think anyone who has ever felt the wrath of racism should feel stronger because of it, because you know so much better than the ones who are dishing it out, that their fear and hate is based on insubstantial nothings that has nothing to do with you as an individual. That's one more person you are better than. Hell, maybe even have a little fun with it......Like, if you're black, and someone's mom is freaking out because you're black, I'd start talking smack to her face and start telling her how you're gonna get her son in with the hoes up in this bitch!!! :D

Polar, you're right about that. It does make you stronger in the long run, but that instant it happens, you feel a little less. Even if it is just for a second, it still takes a little piece of the faith that you have in others away from you, and that is truly sad. It is something that you have a hard time finding, once it's gone.

Only a liberal democrat huh. Oh, I forgot, you're not that either. If he had been a liberal democrat it would have been okay then.

I have been the victim of racist attitudes on many, many occasions. My first year of college, I lived in an athletic dorm on a football scholarship. I was called white boy, cracker, heard all kinds of insults. I never retaliated with racial slurs even though they pissed me off bad. 2 wrongs don't make a right. I have also had some very good friends that are black. I dislike people based on their actions, not on their skin color. I hate black people that hate me because i'm white or for that matter any race of people that hate me because of my skin color.

yes

i have been discriminated against through some thing called affirmative action. many white folks have experienced this in the good ole US.

I work in a resturant that attracts a large black crowd. There was this guy at my table who was not white and when he wanted a refil he would yell hey white boy and bang his cup on the table. I knew I wasnt going to get much of a tip if any from him so I decided to point out the fact that this white boy has a name. I then went on an did a bunch of other things before returning with his drink.

I hear you, but I get that times ten.

wow... all this discrimination, and blatent. I can't say anything has happened to frequently to me. I'm sure I've gotten looks before... but if I were to interpret those looks as "Look at whitey" then I'd be pretty ignorant, wouldn't I? I just assume they are looking at the clown suit I'm wearing.

I AM GOING TO HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH YOU ON THIS. I LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS WHERE THERE ARE MANY MIXED RACE PEOPLE. I KNOW LOTS AND LOTS OF THEM. AND JUST ABOUT EVERYONE I KNOW WILL NOT SAY THAT THEY ARE WHITE. THEY SAY THEY ARE BLACK AND SOME EVEN REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE FACT THAT THEY ARE HALF WHITE.

I KNOW THIS ONE GUY WHO IS HALF AND HALF BUT HE LOOKS COMPLETELY WHITE. HAIR, EYES, SKIN, EVERYTHING. HE TELLS PEOPLE HE IS BLACK. I DIDNT BELIEVE HIM UNTIL I MET HIS PARENTS.

WHY IS IT THAT IF A PERSON IS OF MIXED RACE, HE IS AUTOMATICALLY CONSIDERED BLACK. EVEN IF THAT PERSON IS ONLY ONE QUARTER BLACK (ONE PARENT IS HALF BLACK)???

KAYNE

ALSO, WHEN WHITE PEOPLE COME INTO MY PLACE OF BUSINESS, I TELL THEM "CRACKER ENTRANCE IS TO THE BACK BOY".

KAYNE

I dunno if it counts, but I've been told flat out by potential employers that they can't hire me due to racial quotas. I mean, it's not like I was a better applicant or anything...they just had to fill a certain amount of positions with visable minorities.

Okay, now afterall of this negative talk. I met my wife in Canada after I joined the Army. She was not exposed to much racism in her rural part of Ontario. Before we got married, I cautioned her about some of the bad things she was likely to hear sooner or later, and that it could become difficult for our kids at times.

Well I'm happy to say that after 13 years of marriage and living all over the US and some overseas, she is still wondering what in the hell I was talking about.

Everyday; during childhood and through Elementary school. Its the price i payed for growing up in a Caucasion City. I was the "token Jap". I got into fights regularly, to the point where i would be in the office more so then in class. It was tough, coming home with blood dripping off you shouldnt be a issue when your 7 years old. Although times were tough, this really strengthen me greatly. I look back with NO hate nor regret.

And plus it gives me peace at mind knowing i can now kick the shit out of all of them now:D

I took my former partner to my aunts house one year for a family gathering. At one point, we were sitting around the breakfast table, talking about how we grew up with a work ethic.

My grandmother, who was 75, piped in with "when I was young, nobody worked harder than white people".

I was so shocked that this came out of her mouth, that I couldn't say anything. My mom, dad and aunt quickly recovered and started in with "everybody worked hard back then, black or white".

I later apologized to my partner for what she said, but of course, that didn't correct the situation. I felt like I was covering up for somebody else's stupidity. Even though it wasn't directed at me, I felt bad about it, especially since it was a relative that said it.

why is that racist?

Because, in the context of what she said, she implied that nobody worked harder than whites in general! .

I've known some pretty lazy white people, and I've also known some blacks and hispanics that busted their ass, trying to make a living.

She was generalizing in a bad way.

I have seen some of your posts, dballer, and I agree that there are some blacks who use their race as a crutch to get what they want, but I also know of some blacks who use their brains and sweat to get what they want, too.

You and I will probably have differences over the definition of "racist", and that's cool. To me, what my grandmother said sounded pretty racist.

she said when I was young, nobody worked harder than white people. How can you argue this? Not saying that nobody else worked hard.. but maybe this is all she saw.

She gave her opinion.. and she was shot down as a racist.

I'm not from Lousy Anna.

I know what you mean though. I'd like to try and explain.
Back in the old days if you had ANY ammount of Black Blood in you, you were treated with contempt. If your town found out a white woman slept with a Black man. The Klan would rally and have themselves a good Ol' fashion hang'en. It was customary to beat the woman until her own mother couldn't recognize her as well. This only had to happen once in a while. Eventually this brand of thought nested in general psyche. People learned early on to segregate in every possible facet of the meaning.

Apparently these terrorist tactics were highly ineffective. Louisiana has one of the largest mixed-race populations in the US!

sadly yeah i;ve faced it a lot before. just my life and upbringing i guess. my dad has probably experienced more than all the people here together

but my friend got a funny racist story once

he;s greek and he went to dinner with his jewish girlroends family. they asked him if he was jewish. he lied and said yes (his gf told him too)

the grandma then said....'oh thank god we thougt you were greek!'

the family then went on for like 40 minutes about why greek people are dirt while he just took it. he found it hillarious, so did evryone else he told aside from his gf. i think he didnt explode with rage because he could just look each one in they eye and think 'yeah and guess what i've been doing to your daughter :D'

"Back in the old days" If you were a slave owner doing it people would look the other way. Just ask one of Thomas Jefferson's legion of offspring.

These days I wouldn't be surprised if Lousiana had the highest concenrtration of mixed B/W in the U.S.
Nevertheless it used to be taboo.

I still think things are getting better however.

i'm not racist at all, but all i have to say is BET (black entertainment channel) now what would happend if there was a channel called the white broadcast channel or something? why would that be racist and BET is not????

When I was in jr. high school we took a trip to Schliterbahn(sp). (The texas people will know what I'm talking about). Anyways we were about to get on the buses to leave back to Corpus; when this lady comes up to me and tells me that one of her employees saw me "attempting" to shoplift earlier that day. How do you attempt to shoplift without trying to take any merchandice out of the store?????? I was so shocked I didn't even know how to reply, but I have not been back since becuase it hurt me that someone would just make something up about me just becasue of my race.
