First off, I can't imagine why the hell anyone cares at all about karma. Were this a site discussing how cool 3rd grade is and what is for lunch tomorrow at the local elementary school - then I might understand that karma is really something cool.
But considering that we are supposedly a group of grown people - why the fuck people care about it, I don't know.
Anyway - when you do the karma slamming, it tells the server to do a SQL Insert of data. An Insert call writes to disk instead of just reading (and most of the reads are likely cached in memory, so are even faster aside from the disk access factor).
So when you normally do karma, it does that one insert, and then goes merrily on its way, reading from the database and displaying it to you.
The slamming means that it has to do N Inserts in a row, it slows down the machine since disk access and processor threads are taken up to do that when they could be serving out pages. This is even more of a problem on this server since the web server and DB seem to be shared on the same physical machine - so the load ramps up quickly.
What I'm saying is, when you do a karma slam, it slows the site down for everyone.
When you sit there and you reload a page, and it takes forever just to load, that is a sign that the server is very busy. That means that either a lot of people are hitting it, or that it is doing a lot of something on its side.
If it is really slow for like a minute, and then goes back to being "fast" again, then that is not indicative of a high number of users, so it means that it was a high server load in terms of what it was doing.
If you do a karma hit, you are being a dick because you are slowing the server down.
Now, the retarded part, the following will happen for sure:
1) someone will ask what a karma slam is
2) someone will do the karma slam just to slow down the machine, just because they can
Also, if someone could just go ahead and explain what the deal is with the karma, that would be great.
Yeah, just go ahead and explain to me why a grown man or woman would care if they have 10 points or 8 million.
I'd love to know why.
