there's been a lot of new faces come and go since I first joined this cyber-club, and for those of you who don't know, my principle agenda in training and nutrition revolves around issues and complications associated with being born with a club foot. I had my first corrective surgery at 5, the second at 17 and the third at 38. I was consistently redirected towards sedentary activities. You can pretty much figure out most of the story,... at least that's what I thought. The medical industry is just as clueless today as it was 30 years ago and the effects it's had on our physically challenged are mind blowing.
I recently had the great fortune of finding an message board for adults with club feet. Sounds trivial, but all the attention is on infants and children. Once you manage to pass that stage, there just is no research and the options are seemingly dictatorial and bleak. So anyway, I'm just getting really disgusted with the recurring messages sent out by all these veterans. There's a 28 year old man who is on perm. disability because he can't stand on his feet for more than 10 minutes. The moderator always wants to know "what pain pills did your doctor prescribe for you?" People who don't do anything for themselves beyond dealing with orthopedic surgeons and consider pain management something little, round and in a plastic bottle. It's also interesting to note that every one of those pill poppers is also complaining about how sick the drugs make them feel.
When the doctors told my mother that she should encourage me to swim, I got out my bicycle.
When the pain in my lower back started keeping me up all night at the age of 17, and the chiropractor decided that he couldn't straighten out my spine... I started doing sit-ups. When it got bad again, I put a lift on my shoe and started doing situps again
When my knees started hurting, I gave up the bike and bought into the ideologies that my body was just going to break down young in life and quit riding. As you all know, it didn't make my knees any better. 6 years ago I hit the gym.
So, my butt is inherently big and I have one really skinny calf: I'll never be an 'IronGoddess', but I really didn't know how far ahead of the game I am.
I just wanted to let you all know that I'm proud of the fact that
I don't need pills for pain
I don't need braces to walk
and I choose playing rather than watching every time!
