so it was christmas bonus time at work. i've been there 1.5 years.
There are around 60 people in the company- mostly computer technicians and people in production and around 12-15 people in the front office in finance, admin, marketing (me), and sales.
last year, my friend (top salesman) and I had started at the same time. we got our bonuses and compared... same amount. $650.
nice enough... we hadn't expected anything, and any amount at the holidays is a nice thing.
this year, we had no idea how we would do. I knew that I secretly get a monthly bonus that adds up to $3,600 a year, and lately, my bipolar boss has been nasty to me all the time. My friend makes mostly commission on sales, so his base salary is only $30k.
we get our checks and my boss is super sweet. he gives me a hug that lasts way too long, and tells me a bunch of nice things.
then my friend comes in my office and shuts the door. "well?" he asks. "what did you get?" (he's the only one who asks me and the only one i would ever discuss it with).
then he went on to say it was less than last year. He got $500, but after taxes it was like $400 or something.
i open up my envelope and i'm totally confused.
i got $3000. (i wouldn't tell him what I got, but he figured out that I obviously got more than him).
later, i heard the receptionist and another sales guy saying that bonuses were less than last year. the finance guy said his was slightly better. I stayed quiet. yes, i worked very hard this year- but i didn't think it got noticed or appreciated.
it's good to be wrong.
