Without the action of enzymes, life could not exist. Each enzyme in the body works like a "specialist" taking care of a specific function. Therefore our bodies produce a great number of different enzymes, each with a unique job description.

WHAT IS THE JOB OF THE DIGESTIVE ENZYME?
Digestive enzymes break down our food, enabling the nutrients and energy to be absorbed into the bloodstream and stored in the liver or muscles. Stored nutrients and energy can then be ready for use by the body when needed and for repairing all tissues and cells.
Carbohydrates (sugars) are broken down by enzymes known as amylase. Proteins are broken down by enzymes known as protease. Fats are broken down by enzymes known as lipase.

WHAT IS THE REASON FOR SUPPLEMENTATION?
Our bodies produce enzymes and we also obtain enzymes from the raw plant food we eat. As enzymes are susceptible to heat damage, raw fruits and vegetables such as papayas, pineapples, bananas, mangos, and sprouts are the best sources. When the body fails to produce adequate levels of digestive enzymes, supplementation can facilitate proper digestion, prevent or reduce gas and bloating and help stop or reduce adverse food reactions. Some food allergies may be better controlled with the use of supplemental digestive enzymes.

WHAT ARE TRADITIONALLY SUPPLEMENTED ENZYMES?
A natural source digestive enzyme product traditionally includes:

Amylase: assists in the digestion of carbohydrates.

Papain: (from papaya) assists in protein digestion and has anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties

Betaine: provides hydrochloric acid and is valuable for individuals deficient in stomach acid. Betaine aids in protein digestion and may reduce food sensitivities. A significant percent of older people produce inadequate levels of stomach acid.

Bromelain: (from pineapple) assist in protein digestion and provides anti-inflammatory properties.

Also of value would be two common ingredients:

Fenugreek: is well-known for its ability to lubricate the intestines and acts as a bulk laxative.

Okra: with its mucilaginous material is very soothing to the digestive tract, enhancing the digestive process.

WHAT BENEFITS CAN BE EXPECTED?
More complete digestion of the food we eat means better utilization of the energy and nutrition from that food. Better digestion also results in less gas and bloating from incomplete digestion and may reduce or eliminate food allergies. In many people, chronic heartburn is not associated with hyperacidity but with inadequate digestion.
