For 8k, Ill award anyone that can answer in the best words, ideas, stories what zen means, the basic question Ive been asking for a long ass time on EF, look within and YOUR best response will be rewarded with karma, I promise
Like Diogenes I seek your honesty

Diogenes: an ancient Greek philosopher and Cynic who rejected social conventions (circa 400-325 BC)

LOL, I learn much from Brothabill.

Let us celebrate this knowledge by having a crithomancu.

:cow:

Wait, crap, which Diogenes?

Diogenes (Διογένης) is a Greek name shared by several important historical figures:

Diogenes of Sinope (412-323 BC), better known as Diogenes the Cynic or simply Diogenes
Diogenes Apolloniates (c:a 460 BC), philosopher
Diogenes of Seleukia (c:a 150 BC)
Diogenes Laertius (between 200-500 AD), historian
Diogenes of Oenoanda (2nd Century AD), Epicurean
Diogenes of Judea (fl. c. 100-76 BC), general and advisor for Hasmonean king Alexander Jannaeus.

zen?

besides a mispelling of 10 in German (zehn)

The Chinese line of the Buddhist Mahayana Meditation method, influenced by Thaoism and later exported to Japan.

The original Indian word Dhyana was loosely translated into "Chan" by the chinese. What we have today as Zen, come mostly from Japanese

Diogenes of Oenoanda (2nd Century AD), Epicurean
Diogenes of Judea (fl. c. 100-76 BC), general and advisor for Hasmonean king Alexander Jannaeus.
I was referring to Diogenes of Sinope, the cynic, but I always viewed him as the fool with the most hope.

Diogenes - "The Cynic"
(BC, c412-323)

Diogenes was chief among the school known as the cynics, though possibly not representative of it [Diogenes "carried the principles of the sect to an extreme of asceticism." (OED.)]. It was said of Diogenes that throughout his life he "searched with a lantern in the daylight for an honest man." And though Diogenes apparently did not find an honest man, he had, in the process, "exposed the vanity and selfishness of man." (Chambers.)

The sect, known as the cynics, was founded by Antisthenes (444-370 BC), a pupil of Socrates; it was "marked by an ostentatious contempt for ease, wealth, and the enjoyments of life." Diogenes was a pupil of Antisthenes. Diogenes, on coming to Athens from his native lands, Sinope, came as "a rake and spendthrift." After following under the spell of Antisthenes, Diogenes "became at once an austere ascetic, his clothing of the coarsest, his food the plainest, and his bed the bare ground. At length he found himself a permanent residence in a tub."

(The meaning of cynicism today is to be found in the OED. "A person disposed to rail or find fault; now usually: One who shows a disposition to disbelieve in the sincerity or goodness of human motives and actions, and is wont to express this by sneers and sarcasms; a sneering fault-finder." The image of a cynic that has come to us is that of a dog.)

An interesting story is the one where the young Alexander the Great (356-323 BC) met Diogenes, then a very old man. The powerful young conqueror, being solicitous of the old philosopher, asked what, if anything he could do for him. Diogenes replied, "Stand out of my sunshine"; to which he added, as Alexander took his leave, "If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."

a ZEN story for example that applies to Needto and Angel, not the answer but to them perhaps

Gudo was the emperor's teacher of his time. Nevertheless, he used to travel alone as a wandering mendicant. Once when he was on his way to Edo, the cultural and political center of the shogunate, he approached a little village named Takenaka. It was evening and a heavy rain was falling. Gudo was thoroughly wet. His straw sandals were in pieces. At a farmhouse near the village he noticed four or five pairs of sandals in the window and decided to buy some dry ones.

The woman who offered him the sandals, seeing how wet he was, invited him in to remain for the night in her home. Gudo accepted, thanking her. He entered and recited a sutra before the family shrine. He was then introduced to the women's mother, and to her children. Observing that the entire family was depressed, Gudo asked what was wrong.

"My husband is a gambler and a drunkard," the housewife told him. "When he happens to win he drinks and becomes abusive. When he loses he borrows money from others. Sometimes when he becomes thoroughly drunk he does not come home at all. What can I do?"

"I will help him," said Gudo. "Here is some money. Get me a gallon of fine wine and something good to eat. Then you may retire. I will meditate before the shrine."

When the man of the house returned about midnight, quite drunk, he bellowed: "Hey, wife, I am home. Have you something for me to eat?"

"I have something for you," said Gudo. "I happened to be caught in the rain and your wife kindly asked me to remain here for the night. In return I have bought some wine and fish, so you might as well have them."

The man was delighted. He drank the wine at once and laid himself down on the floor. Gudo sat in meditation beside him.

In the morning when the husband awoke he had forgotten about the previous night. "Who are you? Where do you come from?" he asked Gudo, who was still meditating.

"I am Gudo of Kyoto and I am going on to Edo," replied the Zen master.

The man was utterly ashamed. He apologized profusely to the teacher of his emperor.

Gudo smiled. "Everything in this life is impermanent," he explained. "Life is very brief. If you keep on gambling and drinking, you will have no time left to accomplish anything else, and you will cause your family to suffer too."

The perception of the husband awoke as if from a dream. "You are right," he declared. "How can I ever repay you for this wonderful teaching! Let me see you off and carry your things a little way."

"If you wish," assented Gudo.

The two started out. After they had gone three miles Gudo told him to return. "Just another five miles," he begged Gudo. They continued on.

"You may return now," suggested Gudo.

"After another ten miles," the man replied.

"Return now," said Gudo, when the ten miles had been passed.

"I am going to follow you all the rest of my life," declared the man.

oh cmon guys, there is NO WRONG answer, just your best intuitive understanding

Suiwo, the disciple of Hakuin, was a good teacher. On a certain day a certain pupil came to him, and Suiwo gave him the problem, "Hear the sound of one hand."

The pupil remained three years, but could not pass the test. One night he came to Suiwo in tears. "I must return to my home in shame," he said, "for I cannot solve the problem."

"Wait another week," said Suiwo. "Meditate constantly." Still no enlightenment came to the pupil. "Try for another week," said Suiwo. The pupil obeyed, but to no avail.

"Still another week," requested Suiwo, but in vain. In despair the pupil begged to be released, but Suiwo asked for one more meditation of five days. They too were without result. Then Suiwo said: "Mediate for three days longer. If you still fail to attain enlightenment, you had better kill yourself."

On the second day the pupil was enlightened.

GODDAMMIT, its so fucking simple, what ZEN is, its when you finally fucking get it. The sound of one hand, after all those years. Its enlightenment of the simplest order. Ok, let me find another example. Ryokan comes to mind

Ok, lol, here's another story or idea]

Ryokan, a Zen master, lived the simplest kind of life in a little hut at the foot of a mountain. One evening a thief visited the hut only to discover there was nothing to steal.

Ryokan returned and caught him. "You have come a long way to visit me," he told the prowler, "and you should not return empty-handed. Please take my clothes as a gift."

The thief was bewildered. He took the clothes and slunk away.

Ryoken sat naked, watching the moon. "Poor fellow," he mused, "I wish I could have given him this beautiful moon."

I believe zen would be like entering a "zen" state which would be a peaceful and tranquil place. A place where you are one with yourself and can notice and feel your own well being.

I have yet to find this.

Well, physics is confusion, so if zen is enlightenment, I sincerely doubt I'll be comprehending it anytime soon, lol.

you have three days, at the end of the three days, if you dont understand all of enlightenment and what the sound of one hand clapping means you must kill yourself. Then, may you understand what enlightenment is

I have yet to find this.

That is, entering Nibbana, the escape from karma and reincarnation. To have learned your lessons. To have longlasting enlightenment. The ZEN state such as pinball ZEN or ZEN like state in sports, means no thought, that it all flows, mind and body etc..
Its a ZEN definition, but, not an answer as you state youve never found this. Im looking for someone to give the answer, to what is so simple, as ZEN to them, as simple as Samoth hearing the sound of one hand

zen=any word

If it were anyone else Id say that is not enough information, given, that zen is based on ideas being communicated making all words pointless depending on the person communicating, the listener hearing the words and the context in which they are uttered. You so far, have given the best answer yet, but, thats b/c of my prejudices. So, for those who dont know what you are saying, explain. And in less than twenty hours Ill reward to the best. And since, lil effort went into it your response and more effort may go into a lesser response. The choices will be difficult.

I want Samoth to understand enlightenment thinking that he has three days left to live and to hear the sound of one hand.
If someone can explain what that enlightenment is, or you Wodin. then the prize is yours

There is the one when he comes the whole world cannot stop him, and when he goes the whole world cannot hold him back.

Who is that one?

Its me of course.

"Too many pairs of steel shoes were worn out by walking and seeking along the roads,
But nothing could be found after he got over ten thousand miles.
Suddenly he saw it right under his feet without toil

For me zen is being centered, having inner peace and looking past all the superficial and materialistic crap the world throws at me , and by living this way I feel I will be enlightened and know exactly why I am put on this earth. its constant learning and growing both mentally and spiritually.

What is zen?

Zazen is a romanized Japanese term. "Za" literally means to sit or sitting; "zen" means to meditate or concentrate. Actually, "zazen" is much more than "sitting in meditation". In short, "zazen" is a Buddhist practice to settle your mind in its original state: purity and clarity, and from that you can see everything in the world as it is.
"Zen" is a Japanese pronunciation for the Chinese word "Ch'an", and "Ch'an" is in turn a Chinese pronunciation of the word "Dhyana" in Sanskrit or "Jhana" in Pali, the two ancient forms of the language used in India, in the time of the Buddha, more than 2,500 years ago.

It was also known as "Yoga", another Sanskrit term, which is a method of mental practice used by Brahmins before the time of the Buddha.

Originally, "Dhyana" is a practice for settling the mind, which is usually wandering around at all time and leads us into confusion state. However, "Ch'an" or "Zen" is something more than meditation or concentration. It combines the threefold practice of Bodhisattva's Way:

Observing Sila (Precepts)
Developing Samadhi (Power of Mind Focusing)
Practicing Prajna (Wisdom).

"Zen" is not simply a device for centering and calming the mind but also embracing the wisdom of enlightenment.

There is no worng or right answer.
Zen is within you and it is what you want it to be.

Zen ( P ) Pronunciation Key (zn)
n.
A school of Mahayana Buddhism that asserts that enlightenment can be attained through meditation, self-contemplation, and intuition rather than through faith and devotion and that is practiced mainly in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Also called Zen Buddhism.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Japanese zen, from Chinese (Mandarin) chán, meditation, from Pali jhna, from Sanskrit dhynam, from dhyti, he meditates.]
Word History: It is hard to believe that a word as Asian as Zen is ultimately an Indo-European word. Zen, which has been in English since 1727, is the Japanese pronunciation of Chinese chán, “quietude.” Chán comes from Pali jhna, from Sanskrit dhynam, “meditation,” from the Sanskrit root dhy-, dh-, “to see, observe.” The Indo-European root behind the Sanskrit is *dhei-, *dhy-, “to see, look at.” This root also shows up in Greek, where *dhy- developed into s-, as in Common Greek *sma, “sign, distinguishing mark.” This became sma in Attic Greek, the source of English semantic.

to me, zen is being comfortable inside your own head.
thats it, nothing more.

not 'inner peace' or whatever, cause we'll never get that. its not having 'inner peace' and being ok with it.

I understand it as ... the connection with One ... One being the common link between all sources of energy.

A Zen experience is when you make that connection and become One with All.

Examples are .... orgasm, physical action without thinking, deep meditation, the moment of death ....

For me Zen is awareness.....I'ts being of one mind......unaffected by our past, present or future.....Unnaffected and unmuddled by the environmental Confusions that bombard us daily. It's being of simple mind so that we can lead a saner life.

Having said that I also think it's the art of motorcycle maintanance so what do I know....=)

"It is hard to be brave" said Piglet, sniffing slightly, "when you're only a very small animal."

..that's actually Te but I like it anyhoo..
