70's physiques vs. Now

Other than current body-builders being overall a lot more massive. I think the biggest difference between the two genres is the size of the quads and backs of today vs. back then.

My question is are there different exercises that people are doing today for their quads and backs? Or do you think the massive size difference of those 2 muscle groups should be attributed to todays different gear useage?

Ever watch pumping iron bros doing the same exercises today as was done back then..I think the reason for bigger wheels and lats are higher doses as well as new agents like slin and gh..

i think its definetley gear related not workouts those guys worked out balls to the back then and did the same excersizes as today they probably even did more hardcore workouts then todays pros remember there was not alot of machine back then and they had to rely on mostley free weights

I have "Pumping Iron" also and I personally think that exercise form has a lot to do with the size of their back and legs also. If you notice in that video their form was absolutely horrible in most exercises. We know a lot more today about correct form and what it can do for your body. Look at that video again and closely watch them doing lat pulldowns(behind the neck, and swinging like madmen), lateral raises(way above shoulder height, which gives you now extra benefit). Steroids have come a long way since then too, but I think the way we exercise today has a lot to do with it also:)

I think physiques looked the best in the late 80's.

I think it is definitely gear related. the physiques have gone from a natural look to a pure freakish look. It's a perpetual cycle now, someone takes mass mounts of gear, especially GH and insulin to gain an advantage, and then the next guy has to do the same and so on and so on. I don't think liftin weights has changed much, besides what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another. There has never been no absolute correct way or right way to get big, everyone is different.

Personally, I believe that it is (to some extent) a "style" trend. Notice also that chests and arms are less of a focus nowadays than in the 70s. I just got back from the Mr. Iowa contest (which was a tiny show) and saw the whole range of physique "styles." One guy looked like Ed Corney circa 1979, another had a protruding gut and bellybutton (GH?), and some were just big or small. Obviously, it does depend on what you take, how you train, and what standard you are trying to achieve (i.e. style). Just my 2 cents.
