5-htp

Helps a bit get asleep

interesting as a mild mood enhancer (see serotonin) and food cravings
 
Well, I've been taking it to go to sleep. And I guess I'm able to sleep fine. But I just wanted to know if it was the 5-HTP or just a placebo effect.
 
I remembered this post from BrooklynJuice that may help:

If you have any decent amount of Vitamin-B6 floating around 5-HTP will do more harm then good (and to think most 5htp products are sold combines with it!).

High levels of serotonin in brain = good.
High levels of serotonin in blood = possible heart valve damage.

When 5-htp is taken with Vit-b6 the conversion does not take place in the brain rather in the stomach. And from there some does get up to the brain, however most if it will be floating around in your blood and it *may* cause trouble with the heart.
 
I took 5-htp for sleep. I tried 25mg one night and the 200-300mg another night. It did not make me fall asleep at all. In fact it actually kept me up kind of gave me a stimulant effect like adderall. But the amazing thing was when I finally fell asleep it was 4 am, and I woke up at 8 am and I felt like I had just slept for 10 of the best hours of sleep in over 5 years. It was amazing. That was until later in the day I got very constipated, and my ass started to bleed. This is not bulshit,. Obviously every one responds differently to stuff so I am not saying this will happen to you, but it did happen to me. I would suggest adding extra fiber and lots of water to your diet and possible some naturally laxative if you take it just to be sure. I can;t rememeber the name of the shit I took.

I been asking advice on how long the 5htp should take to work. Those who've taken it all tell me its a matter of days at the most, but the 'experts' tell me it can take *1 month* to take effect. Whats the deal here???
