whats a gmail account and how does it differ from a regular e-mail account?

I have two and I don't really use them. I'm not crazy about the idea of them indexing my mail but you can't beat free.

its a free email account with a gigabye of storage.

Similar to hotmail or yahoo but less ads and better user interface in my opinion.
