3x5 instead of 5x5

Im trying to determine if I am consdered a "begginer" or "intermediate" lifter. I have been working out for a year or so, but only on the basic isolation machines which did zero for me. I started the bill starr 5x5 last week, but Im not sure if it would be more beneficial for me to do the 3x5? I am 180lbs 6'4". I really wanna get stronger and build some muscle. Im not looking to be enormous. I have been eating more since my last post and have also been using protein shakes. Should I use the rippetoe 3x5 first and then switch to the 5x5 after I have built some strength up? Also how long should I stay on each routine?
Thanks

I think you will see results off of either the 5x5 or the 3x5, both will do what you're looking to do.

Stay on the routine for as long as you can progress, I starting lifting about 7 months ago, and started with the 5x5, and stayed on it for 22 weeks the first time. Took some time off because of an injury, but am now back on it again.

I think im going to try the 3x5. I feel like it will be easier for me to stick to a constant weight for all the sets, only because im not used to following a routine and its hard to determine the ramping weight thing. I am hoping that I can get some good numbers out, because right now Im feeling pretty weak.

Any advice on deadlifts? I have not really done them before and I wanna make sure I dont hurt my back or anything.

Also is it bad to drink a protein shake on the days you dont work out? Im trying to eat more every day, especially meat and vegetables.

Another plus for the 3x5 is that you increase weight at every session. You can simply make quicker gains at your stage. If you are really going to do it, I'd advise buying Rippetoe's book, Starting Strength. All your form and safety questions will be answered there.

You can drink protein shakes any day of the week.
