36 inch vertical... is this right?

I measured myself with my hand extended fully above my head. normally i stand 6ft tall, with my hand up i was 7ft at the tip of my fingers. I tested my jump today on a regulation basketball net and managed to touch the top of the rim. if the regulation net is 10 feet does this mean ive got a 36 inch vertical?

if you are 6 feet tall your vertical reach is more than 7 ft. unless you have ridiculously short arms.

Top of rim is 10 feet

there is also a bit of body stretch when you jump as well.

the only way to accurately measure vertical is to see how high the middle of the heel goes above the gorund

I believe the only way to accurately measure a vertical is to measure the change in center of gravity (approximately the pelvic area). Otherwise, there are large inconsistencies. So you should measure where your pelvis is when you're standing straight up, and then where it is at the peak of your jump.

yeah you were right it was 7'6 in total.
CCJ, how do you do that?

very hard to do :)

jump and reach is close enough, but will be off by 1-3 inches for the better.
It doesn't really matter anyway

there are some systems the measure jump by flight time using contact maps or infared. I've also seen a measuring device that puts a tape measure aorund a belt on your waist and you jump etc

Do it against a wall in a gym. Get one side of your body against the wall with your arm stretched as high as you can reach with both feet flat on the floor, and make a measurement of how high that mark is. Then space yourself from the wall maybe two or three inches. Stand with both feet shoulder width apart or something similar to that, and leap as high as you can straight up use chalk or wet your finger tips to leave a mark on the wall. Measure this height then do the math this is how you do it without those special vertical leap measuring things. If you take a run at it or even one or two steps it's not a true vertical leap measurement, it must be from a stand still off both feet.
