2 security MUSTS for EF members

2 programs that should be up and running on everyones computers.

Privoxy - a good free proxy server
Tor - makes traffic from your computer appear as if its coming from a different IP address. i.e. i can change mine to have an IP valid for a service provider in europe, canada, any US state, china, etc. At any time you can change this on the fly. The proxy also helps protect your PC from certain things, keylogger installs, etc. If you need any help PM me.

These are great tool to help prevent identity theft.

Do you find that they slow down your internet speed at all? I've tried some IP blocking software, but it really slowed down my connection speed.

it does. choose an IP closer to your physical location, i've found that helps some. I think the slowness is not a bad trade-off for the security.

yes tor will slow down your internet speed. You can donate bandwidth if it is really bothersome. Or just run Tor when you feel you need some added security.

Thanks for the advice man, is Tor a free prog or what?

completely free. it would be cool if a mod could make this a stick for a day or two. i don't care if it's in my name or not, hell repost it. i don't think with the recent events that have occured anyone can afford not to use this, especially when signing on to the boards.

i concur. But, it is slow has hell. Its a must when sending emails (encrypted) and posting online. The problem is that SOme of the proxy sites have IP bans here. But, if you use mozilla you can download a "Tor button" allowing you to toggle. The control panel allows you to change identities/locations, alledgedly

good advice.

If you're a lazy ass like me, then just use your neighbors wireless internet.. make sure to spoof your MAC address of course.. (makes it 100x harder to trace you..) And if by chance your neighbors have WEP on their router, crack it.

I'd like to hear more from actual users, and any problems they might have encountered.

nothing for me yet except slower internet connection with Tor. You can tweak some settings to get some of that speed back. However I think the slower connection is a good trade-off for the extra security.

very good program for masking your IP... It definitely slows your CPU down a ton and you have to use firefox when running it.

Sounds cool but how do you do it?

read the directions. :) nah just install it basically, there isn't much to configure in privoxy. once you install privoxy, you need to go in IE to tools, internet options, connections, lan settings, check use a proxy server - use the address 127.0.0.1 and port 8118. This will block alot of nasty stuff from being installed on your PC via any web page. Helps to block key loggers, etc. Tor is very easy to use. You can go into the menu after installing it and click on another flag in the list and then click switch identity. Once you do that, go to www.whatismyip.com and your PC will be registered on the internet with whatever state/country you chose and have a new outside IP. Your cable modem/DSL modem will still have the same outside IP. but all traffic coming from your computer will appear to have the IP that you chose in Tor. May sound complicated but its really not.

bro, all those steps are unnecessary if you use mozilla. If you go to the mozilla mainpage you should search "tor button" this will allow you to toggle it on and off. It is awesome.

because it is. you must have mcafee firewall installed. this is normal. just choose to allow it always.

I don't think this works worth a shit. On another forum this dude has a little sign showing you your ip address, browser, internet provider and says that he forgot the name of your girlfriend lol.

Does it correctly state you location? Or does it says xianxiang or belgium or another place? What you are talking about is the hack pics from danasoft. If it says you are in another place, then it works fine. If not, then your tor is not running correctly. make sure it is "tor enabled"
Good luck
