2-3 week temp job offer

healother

New member
An old boss called and is offering me a temp job for 2-3 weeks. I guess he needs many computer parts at a certain business to be inventoried, stored, disposed of, etc. He wants me to do both that and help with regular support tickets at the business. He's offering me 17.50.

I might do it, given that this will break my record of not working in almost 3 months.

But I'm bothered cuz its only 3 weeks, another contract (making taxes more complicated, and its a damn 1099 so i have to pay an additional 7.5% FICA tax), and its about a 30-40 minute drive away from my house :(

if that's the case, do you have an actual game plan?
i mean, how are you looking? are you just looking in the paper?
do you know of local businesses that hire people in your field? go to their websites and see if they have a 'career' link, OR, just write to human resources and say that you're currently looking for employment and would like to know if they are currently hiring.
have you gone to the local college website? they usually have a job listing section. how about monster? hotjobs?

Hope it doesn't interfere with your sex life, bro.

:lmao:

it probably will, given that this girl can only hang out at night. we'll have to do it on a friday night or something. not sex, but the other stuff.

i read the paper sometimes, use careerbuilder.com sometimes, and i do check college websites for jobs. But I dont use any of these things often enough and I dont call places often enough.

Also I've been mainly looking at IT jobs, which arent all that fun, so maybe I should start looking for other stuff, but then the problem is that I dont know what I'm looking for.

But no, I dont have a gameplan. I should probably either come up with one, or take this temp job.

i think u should cuddle this boss. he calls u up out of the blue, makes u drive 30-40 mins to see him and he obviously likes you.

I have had temp jobs before and the best thing about them...if they suck, you know your on limited time anyway. :)

Something that lasts longer...

Well do it.. But look for something that lasts longer than 3 weeks... After that yr back to square 1...

What do you want to get into?

I don't really know what I want to do, I think for now I'm just going to do IT stuff, if it pays the bills.

Longer than 3 weeks would be nice, but keep in mind its pretty difficult to get permanent employment in IT these days, lots of places have just a few permanent workers, while hiring contractors for growth periods and things like that. I think you sort of have to work your way into a permanent position with experience or connections or something like that.
I've been told 3-6 month contracts are pretty nice to shoot for, since they allow you to gain experience from lots of different jobs while learning a lot at the same time.

Having a permanent IT job with benefits would be nice, but I dont know how long I'll want to do IT for, or even how long I'll want to stay up here in Minnesota for.
So I guess I can just settle for contracts, and pray that I dont have any kinds of health problems or that my teeth dont rot in the mean time :worried:

Hmmm... Thats a tough job to be in... Have to go with flow and see what happens... Something more long term will come up... Give it time, Yr young too, You'll have experience too from various jobs.. thats good

the right company will come and take you on in no time.. 3-6 months contract seems good... You'll have a steady income...

Have a look at other jobs that might interest you too.... Never stick to one thing until you know for sure its for you.... :)

yeah, i hate looking for new jobs, and it usually take me awhile to find one, so its a tough call.

But yeah, finding the right job is key, and honestly I'm not even sure if its IT that I want. most places expect a 2 year committment as minimum when someone does IT.
