If I'm not mistaken, the half life of melatonin is like 35 to 50 minutes. In the early days when scientists discovered and were experimenting with melatonin, the only problem found with high dosages came when an amount of the active substance was still remaining upon awakening. From what I recall, drowsiness was experienced the next morning because of this. I don't think 12 mg is enough to last through the whole night.
