Portage County...A 10 year old student was chained as punishment in front of his mother. And now a portage County school district has suspended an intermediate school principal over the unusal method of discipline.
Forth grader Cody Becker demonstrated for us with a similar chain the discipline he received this January.
"He shouldn't be doing that to a kid...especially my age', Becker said.
He was in the principal's office for having cd's on the bus. His mother called to Southeast Intermediate School in Palmyra to witness the whole thing.
"I was in disbelief, said Patricia Manges.' I didn't know what to think at the time. I didn't know what to do. That's why I didn't do anything until then."
Manges filed a complaint with the sheriff 3 months later but other parents who know Rich Arnold support his methods including a parent who's 11 year old daugter was used by Arnold in a chain demonstration.
"He put it on and said,' this is how bad deeds are, they weigh you down and then you do good deeds and the chains come off and you feel lighter,''explained Barry Sapp.
The superintendents says she put the principal on paid administrative leave as soon as the charges surfaced and she'll make a decision on his status once her investigation is complete. But according to Cody and his mom, the effects of the discipline have lasted months.
"I have nightmares on it," the boy said.
Patricia Manges appeared in juvenile court Thursday, charged with letting her son miss school in April( she says because he's still upset by the chaining)
The Portage County Sheriff's department and prosecutor are still looking at charges.
