I was reading a mag over the weekend and it said that Arnold used to have to use oxygen tanks after his workouts.. thats how intense they were. yes lifting weights does require a lot of breathing and the healthier your lungs are the better. so if you want to get serious i would lay off the cigs ASAP to get full lung function. plus if you want to be able to run fast for football its crazy that you smoke. you would have a better 40 time with clean lungs. your teammates will lose respect for you as well if they smell cigs on you.
i've had hard workouts while on cycle and I literally was sucking air, and I have never smoked. so i cannot imagine your situation.
