I agree with BK. Go see a doctor. Do not use exercises that will involve your back or traps. You may make the injury worse and it will take a long time to recover. It's not a smart move to work around injuries. Just take time off from training until you have completely recovered. An example: Back in the year 97, I hurt my knee doing heavy squats. I didn't have a spotter at the time (bad move) and I messed up my knee. I spent 2 months trying to work around that injury. Like instead of doing squats, I'd do leg extensions or lunges. I wanted to keep my legs in good shape. They were in good shape, but my knee was horrible. I took time off from training, about 6 months. The pain has gone away a bit. Now I use spotters and always wrap up my legs for heavy movements. I hope your traps gets better. Good luck.

Chances are you just strained your trap or something and you just have to quit training for a while. Personally, I think the doctor will tell you the exact same thing and I wouldn't bother going to him but that's me. It might be a good idea though.

trapped / impinged nerve. Read up on ATR (Active Tension Release) therapy's. I had what sounds exactly the same and got it fixed in less than ten minutes by a massage therapist. Keep an open mind. as far as seeing the Doc...heres what you'll get.......
"stop weight training it is dangerous, and take these ibuprofen for the inflamation / pain" If you do see anyone, see a qualified ATR person, a sports injuries specialist or a
massage therapist. A GP is basically a waste of time for most injuries. Cheers bro, G.

Hey guys thanks for all your info. Do you think I can take anything to strenghten that trap again so it will not strain again.

could be your trap, could be the muscle involved in keeping your head up. runs from your head down beneath the traps to a point by the shoulder blades. i pull that one every once in a while. you said you did it while bench pressing? do you lift your head up? do you press it back hard against the pad? could be you strained that muscle. the traps are a large muscle group, chances are you didnt do anything to them. the lesser support muscles tend to get hurt more often.

I push or keep my head against the pad when I bench press. Yea I feel the sharp pain in my neck and seems to run underneath my traps. I was able to do a backwork out that day also with no problems.
