Lately I have been having some pain in my left shoulder while benching...It doens't bother me till I get to around 275lbs. I am 5'8 now and weigh 200. I have done 400lbs in the past (about 5 years ago weighed 185 then) but just got back into serious lifting in April.. Well 2 weeks ago I did 3 sets of heavy benching, for me (300x6, 300x5, 300x3) and afterwords both my shoulders where achy. Since then my left shoulder hurts now when I bring the bar down to about 5 inches off my chest. Not a stabbing pain but enough to cause me to back off. My next workout after the 300 episode I didn't go over 225 (I did it 15 times first set but could of done 5 more) Today I did my warm ups and went to 275 and only did 4 when my shoulder told me to stop. This is the only exercise that is hurting my shoulder...I do standing barbell presses with no problem and also side laterals. I hope that this is not a sign of a rotator cuff problem. Anyone have any thoughts on what the problem is?? Overtraining?? I have been doing chest shoulsers and tri's 2 times a week the last 2 months (I put on 15lbs) but I usually do each body part once a week. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

The Fantom1 I have a similar thing going on in my left shoulder as well. Mine, as well, only bothers me on benching (especially the flat). I do work my rotators twice a week to keep the strong. However this feeling bothers me as well. What I have started doing recently is doing pre-exhaustion on my chest before benching. I do several sets of incline and flat flies first. I then move to Incline Benching, follow lastly by Flat Benching. This seems to be giving me a good workout on the chest and by the time I get to flat benching my chest is getting tired. I have to use lighter weight and my shoulder is definately warmed up. This make the left shoulder "pain" much less noticable and hopefully gets me around that problem or causing a further problem.

If you guys train shoulders, I recommend doing low volume. You use your shoulders for so many lifts. Bench Pressing works your outer and middle delt. Pulldowns and rows work your posterior deltoid. I recommend just doing two shoulder exercises during the offseason and three shoulder exercises during the cutting phase. The two I recommend are Barbell and Dumbbell presses. I never do presses behind the neck, they mess up your rotator cuffs. I also recommend side laterals. You don't really need to train you posterior deltoid during the offseason. You can, but I never train mine until my cutting phase which lasts 3 months. Don't do too many sets. I recommend 2-3 sets each. Don't make each set too heavy. Go easy on them. This may help you with your problem.

I posted this question on another board and someone suggested that it could possibly be an inflammed bicep tendon. Something I didn't even think of. The guy had the same exact problem as a I have and an MRI showed the inflammed tendon. He had to take 3 months off of training...

Could be a bursistis of the sholder joint, I got that in my right sholder after a series of hevy bench sessiond.

Get an ultrasound done to see if there's an inflamation.

What I can also suggest is to strengthen you're supporter muscles but doing sets of front raises ect

Oh and ICE ICE ICE,

Cary and Ice pack inyour gym bag and ice your sholder straight after the workout to stop them from inflaming.

You could also try an anti-inflamotary gel or some other product which you would apply befor your set.

BACK OFF ON THE SHOULDER AND CHEST WORKOUTS.
START DOING SOME ROTOR CUFF EXERCISES.
WARM UP THE SHOULDER REGION WITH VERY LIGHT (10 LBS.) FRONT AND SIDE DELT RAISES.
USE ICE WHEN NEEDED AND TAKE 1 ADVIL(IBUPROFEN) OR ASPRIN BASED PRODUCT BEFORE TRAINING.

I FEEL SPOOKY GIVES THE CORRECT ADVISE,HOWEVER DO YOU BENCH WITH YOUR ARMS
CLOSER IF SO THEN YOU MIGHT BE HITTING YOUR
SHOULDER MORE INSTEAD.BTW TRY MUSCLE RELAXANT
(FROM PHARMACY)IT MIGHT EASE THE PAIN.

I have had shoulder pain for six years. bad pain off and on.
I finally gave up and went to see a chiropractor. I made sure it was not a goof, but some one who understood the body.

What they do is align the spine. In one week I went from a 6 pain on a scale from 1 to 10, to a 1 pain. By the end of the second week I had no pain.
Now one month later I still have no pain.

Moral of the story is.... most back pain is caused by the spine being "fuct up." Find a chiro, (cost me 315 for two weeks, then 45 for each month after, 4 visits a month) and solve ur pain.

Could be bursistis. I know, I have it. I let the Doc look at my workout and he said to lay off the side latterals for a while. He said that it was caousing too much stress on the bursa. That and he gave me a script for ifrupropren 800mg.
