I have a '96 Dodge Avenger with WAY TOO MANY miles on it. I have a manual odometer and I want to flip the miles back. Now, I heard that the Chrysler's have a chip memory on the transmission so if they were to run a diagnostic on it they could tell I fucked with the odometer. So if anyone knows if they have a chip or not let me know! THANKS! ------------------     | ||

I have been around cars my whole life. Do I know them - enough to cause me trouble. My father owns a service station, and I have never heard of this. I'll ask next time I see him - which should be tomorrow. | ||

I dont know about the trans, but they could just check the engine computer. I know that when owners of late model corvettes bring their cars in for engine trouble Chevy first checks the engine computer to find out what top speed the car has done. If you were hot rodding at over 100mph, say goodbye warranty- | ||

THE CAR 96 dodge avenger HAS NO WAY OF TRACKING THE MILES, unless you have to it in for service and the wrote the miles down, or the last state inspection if you have those in your state, or the last place you had the oil change. Be careful with where you the car in the past. Do not worry about some internal car memory. This is not a VET and it does not have that option.> | ||

You'll get Burnt, Your computer would know. And besides that most manual ones have a anti-tamp feature. Although some cars you can take out the fuse for gauges, and the Odometer stops. Although you would have to be careful speeding. | ||

Hello!!!!!! This is an Avenger. It has no such memory in the computer. I have seen the digital odometers of BMWs being flicked back without problems and they are 10 years ahead of any American car. The dealer calculates the mileage by the wear and tear on the car. He will know if you went overboard and rolled it back too much but he really won't care because he wants you to buy the new car. He just gets rid of the trade-in's through the used car middlemen as fast as he can. He will give you a reaming on the trade-in no matter what so you can do it, but have a professional do it since he will not leave any traces (and you will). Whoever says a compact midsize American car has the level of technology to keep track of mileage is on crack! If you have proof, then I would be glad to admit I am wrong (but I am right on this one). | ||

I just talked with my father - His back ground 43 years in the business. That car has an on board computer running the car. It records alot of info - including mileage. The dealer has the ability to get that data out. My father said he had heard of people getting snapped on this recently. Its not on the trany it part of the electronic system that runs the car. Basically the dealers requested this from the manufactures so as they could protect themselves on late model trade-ins. Hope this helps - I have never heard of this before. So it was worth asking. I have cousins who are used car wholesalers and used car salesmen. I have seen them pick up trade-in's 1 hour after the trade in drove on the lot (and these were 92+ cars). There is no time and no advantage to chacking the odometer on trade-in's. I have also seen more than my share of BMW rollbacks without problems. They have had on board computers since 1982. In all of the years I have seen them deal in cars, I have never heard of the OBC having that information. Note: This is an environment where rolling back is very common. | ||

Just call the Dodge dealership and ask them about whether or not Dodges track mileage. Make up and excuse like: "I just bought this car and I think someone turned the miles back, can I check the computer to find out?" I wouldnt take any of these guys advice unless they have worked on and know the ins and outs of automobile computers. | ||

There is nothing on that avenger, other than the odometer that will indicate mileage. Think about it, if there was something that tracked mileage it would have to be connected to the transmission, or it would merely indicate the amount of time the engine has run. Next time you start getting too many miles on your vehicle just scoot ur ass under there and disconnect the cable from the transmission. I have done this on three different vehicles for my buddies who had leases. | ||

Here's an idea. Why don't you just be honest and not roll it back (not a flame). The car eventually goes to some individual that is buying it under the auspice that the car actually has the purported mileage -- not that somebody has committed fraud. Sounds like an unnecessary risk for little reward. Besides, there are plenty of other ways to make money. Mr. T your wrong about the computer on the corvettes. There is no engine computer to track top speed. There is a option on the led in the cockpit to see top speed and average speed. That is what your talking about. I used to own a new style. ONly a retard doesnt reset the computer before he goes in. If over 100mph was the case, no vette owner would have a warranty! Nick | ||

That is 100% correct. My friend bought a new Vette and I added a ram air, Borla exhaust, air temp sensor, coolant bypass kit. We took it down the turnpike down South and hit 162 easily before my friend got scarred and got off the gas. We had tons of straight highway and he got scarred. He brought it in for service all the time and they never said anything. The computer you are talking about is OBDII, III, IV(On Board Diagnostics) It does record rpm highs and lean/rich conditions ABS problems, engine problems(detonation, misfire) I was told OBDIV can record milage. I have a new car and was thinking about diconnecting the speedo(digital) If you have an analog dash, by all means take that shit apart and reset the odometer. It will increae the resale by tons. I am a little nervous, but IO am still willing to do it. | ||

Who's gonna roll back the odometer? You? I have seen more people that can't even change oil try and turn back their odometer. After you fuck it up, you're really fucked. Good luck trying to explain that when you sell it. "I swear it was broken like that before, I didn't touch nothing" LOL |
