Damn. I'm truly shocked.

I didn't know much about racing but I did know Earnhardt and Gordon.

I'm truly saddened by this.

My thoughts are with his family and fans.

Believe this or not, I bought 2 Nascar licensed Hot Wheels cars when the '93 editions came out. I only bought these 2 cars.....Jeff Gordon & Dale Earnhardt.
This is some shit. I can't believe he's gone!

yeh matt, the crash didn't look bad, but it was much worse than flipping. When flipping and banging off of other cars, you are loosing energy with each hit while the car is self destructing and absorbing impact, Dale hit the wall with a sharp quick blow and all energy was lost instantly. I too was in tears today, Living in NC i was born into racing and that man was my hero since i knew what the sport was. He and his family are definitely in my prayers. It is definitely a tragic day.

The worst part for me, in a way, is that his death happened on the last lap of the race. They say he was helping his son who finished second, and his partner Waltrip who won the race driving one of his cars.

A very sad day indeed...

Yeah, if only one thing had gone better for him, if only he were 5 feet further ahead of that car, if only he was behind that pack of cars.....but when God wants someone he is going to take them. I too was in tears. Dale and my Dad resemble a LOT...and they met each other at a local track here in GA, and a guy asked me Dad for his auto because he thought they were brothers, and the guy went to get Dale's auto and said to him..."hey I got your brother's autograph too." Dale looked at my Dad and laughed histarically. This is like losing a family memeber. He was truly a living legend.

Good point, Nick.

You can't really play the "if" game since it really doesn't matter. But it's funny how we do that to ourselves.

Makes you doubt free will to a certain extent and wonder if there is a determined plan for the universe.

Dale will be missed...

I guess dying doing something you truly love is the best way to go, it's just too soon. I pray for his family, friends and fans alike. God bless them in their time of need.

My best friend worked the races this year. She called me at around 6pm and told me the news.

This is the local paper there. It was just updated at 8:25pm. It's a sad, sad day. It will be front page news in Daytona for a long time....

I saw the crash, I don't think it was the impact with the wall that killed him. It was probably when he hit the wall the car that hit him on the side snapped his head to the side and causing his spinal cord to be severed above the first vertabrae. He would have died instantly.

Even the doctors at the hospital were in tears when being interviewed.

Just goes to show you that no matter how much safety equipment you have how fragile we humans really are. Cherish the moment of life, it may slip away in an instant before we are aware.

It's good to see that there has been no smart ass' writing in these threads. This is a devastating blow to me too. Man, I have been one big kid/baby these past couple of hours with the tears. There really couldn't have been a bigger blow to me than this.

To all of those that loved the guy and watched him race, we all know that the race was never over til he crossed that line at Daytona. He was the master at the draft and the superspeedways. There will never be anyone close to him. That fucking last lap at Daytona has either been the best OR the worst for Earnhardt. I mean, the guy lost a race because a damn pigeon flew down in front of him and ruined his car. This is unheard of. Every one knows that he could have passed Waltrip and Jr. today, but he showed his true love for his family and friend by not doing so. Instead, he helped block Marlin who probably had the best/fastest car. Today, the world has lost a true sports legend and hero. The Intimidator, The Man In Black, etc...will be in my heart forever.

Yes this really seems like a bad dream...When I was little kid I wanted to be like him. Drive fast cars straight to the edge. He had some Great races and great battles. I'll always have respect for the way he represented racing, not to mention himself and his faimly. Reguardless if you like racing or not, chances are you have heard something about this man and it was probably respectfull.

before I even got my drivers license I wanted to get a black muscle car and paint his number on the sides....When I was little my dad and I painted my little hotwheels car black with his number so I could pretend I was driving his car.

Amen to all of these posts. I am watching a program now, a tribute to his racing career and life. Showing him thismorning spending quality time with his friends and family, not uptight before the race, just spending time with those he loved. Showing him kissing his wife, her hand around his head, true love, true affection. I can't imagine how she feels, her last kiss to him on video, a precious thing and very difficult at the same time. I am soooooo sad. A lot of people who are not even into racing feel a loss, he was/is the MAN.

Well, I am from ATL and have watched NASCAR for as long as I can remember. I thought Dale was awesome for how he drove. That bump Marlin gave him is a move rights out of DE's book. Dale would have done the same thing but 15 laps eariler. I don't know, it just seems like I'm not surprised Dale wrecked and was killed. In that race he was making moves that weren't exactly smart. Passing on the grass, recklessly blocking probably the best car in the field (Marlin). Well, I am surprised he died, but not wrecked.

He wasn't using all safety devices either unlike someone said in an earlier post. He was not using the HANS device because he said it was comfortable. The HANS device secures the head and neck and would have prevented the violent neck snapping. They asked doctors if that would have saved him and they wouldn't say yes or no so more than likely they know it would have, they just didn't want to admit that if it wasn't for his need for "comfort" he would be alive.

I've always wondered if NASCAR is safer with or without the restrictor plate. God, there is always terrible wrecks at Daytona and Talladega. I remember a few years ago when Gordon had a tire go it caused a 25 car wreck because all cars were grouped up due to the restrictor plate.

I just don't know what to think right now.

I had a house full of people watching the race.
I am still in shock -
He was one of my favorite racers.
I was telling everyone that someone should put him in the wall for blocking. WHy - because he would have done it. Never thought it would happen like that. I felt serious guilt for saying that.

Dale should have worn the full face helmet, strap and collar that all the other drivers are wearing. It won't belong and Jr. will.

Big ol burndaddy offers his condolences to the racing world and to the Earnhardt team and most of all to the Earnhardt family.

Well Dale made Nascar what it is today. I imagine that this next race, millions will be watching to see wether or not Dale Jr. races, and also to see if the #3 is racing as well. I see a big downfall for Nascar now as I saw on the news that loyal, faithful Nascar families who attend races every year, vowed not to ever attend a race again. It wont ever be the same without Dale rubbing his fender against someone else's.

I have two questions for you.

1. Can you imagine how Sterlin Marlin (sp) is feeling about all this?

2. How many of you still get a lump in your throat when you think about this?

I heard today that he died instantly from some sort of "blunt instrument head trauma." Yeah, he died doing what he loved to do. Obviously, he won't be on anymore Realtree videos...he enjoyed that too.

Last lap...

I'm pretty sad about this.

Hey guys,

No when he impacted with the wall he was going 180mph, and going from 180-0 just like that makes your neck snap real violently. Autopsy reported that when his neck snapped forward, he suffered a fractured skull due to violent snap.

This is all I've been thinking about since Sunday night. This make me feel so sad I feel like crying every time I think about it. I was not the biggest fan of Dale, I didn't agree with his driving style and his attitude at times, but he was the GREATEST that ever was and probably ever will be. I can't imagine not watching him turn another lap or hearing the announcers say his name. My friend's father who works on Bill Elliots team used to work for Dale and said he was a real great guy. It is just not going to be the same without him. His memory will live forever in me and I am sure everyone else that knew NASCAR, whether they were a fan of his or not.
I can't imagine how Sterling Marlin is feeling right now. The poor guy ended his good friend's life with a little bump. That is racing, he had no idea what hte outcome was going to be. I just heard that he is starting to get death threats from people. What the fuck is wrong with people?

Keep Dale's memory alive and keep this bumped to the top.

Rest in peace, The Man in Black

I can't believe Sterling is getting death threats beacuse of this. Dale would have been the first to bump anyone in front of him especially on the last lap of the 500. I have studied his racing skills and know that any true Earnhardt fan knows this. The ones sending threats are not focusing on what is important now, prayers for the Earnhardt family, friends and fans. I too am still sad and shocked. Sundays race will be a good but very sad one to watch. I am sure there will be a huge tribute to him, it will be interesting to watch. Get a box of tissues for this one.

It's always sad to see a good person go. And I'm not really a big NASCAR fan. Who couldn't like Dale Earnhardt?
