You need a program called PC anywhere to do it the easiest. Or use hyperterminal on both computers. You'll have to have the one at home waiting for your call.

unless you already have the one at home setup you are out of luck.
if there is someone that has physical access to it, then you can get them to install something on it (pcAnywhere, VNC, BackOrifice... linux - hee hee)
Other than that, you are out.

do you need a file off of it or what? what operating system is it running?

If our machine were on the network and set up for ftp
you would be able to use the ftp command within tcpip to transfer files.

ftp <hostname or ip address>
logon prompt: supply usrid and password
cd /source/directory
dir * (show files in directory)
bin (do transfer in binary if executable)
get sourcefilename outfilename
quit
