I've got a hankering to make some grub for Passover this year (hey, if Im forced to eat ham at Easter, and Im not christian then I wanna show some respect at Passover too)

Only problem is, only Jewish food I know how to make are latkes (ummmmmmm good).

Can anyone help me out? I beleive it is lamb that is traditionally eaten?

I am not Jewish- but my driend gave me this recipe once. I made it once- too much work!

Matzoh Balls:
4 Matzohs
4 T Oil or chicken fat
5 Eggs
1 large onion
4 t chopped fresh parsley
1 c Matzoh meal
1 T Salt
1 t pepper
1/2 t ginger
1/2 t nutmeg

Soak the Matzohs several minutes in warm water and drain. Heat the oil/fat and add onions. Fry until brown. Add matzoh and stir until they leave the side of the frying pan clean. Remove matzohs into a bowl and add sesonings, eggs, parsley and enough matzoh meal to make dough soft.

Place a cover over bowl and put in fridge for 2-3 hours. With wet hands, form balls and throw into either salted water or a mix of chicken broth until they float on top.

You need to find a kosher store in your neighborhood!

Well, if you want to cook kosher, Passover is probably the hardest time to do it. Not only do you have to deal with all of the regular issues (no mixing dairy + meat, no pork, etc), you also can't use most grains (wheat, spelt, oats, barley, or rye). PLUS, if you are cooking for Jews of Eastern European descent (aka Askenazic Jews) then you can't use most nuts or other grains either. So, that doesn't leave you many choices.

One traditional E. European Jewish food that is popular at Passover is Tsimmes. It's a mixture of raisins, prunes, carrots, sweet potatoes and flanken. Sounds appetizing, no? Well, it's an aquired taste.

Oh, one other traditional dish is "Charoset". It is supposed to resemble the mortar the Jewish slaves used to build the pyramids of Pharoah (the resemblance is only visual; they taste nothing alike!). Here's one really easy recipe:

1 cup walnuts (one of the few nuts allowed)
* 1 cup golden raisins
* 1 cup black raisins
* 1 cup dried apricots
* 1 cup prunes
* 1 cup currants
* 1 cup dates
* 1 cup kosher red wine
Put all ingredients into food processor until well blended. It should be paste-like.

cool! Thanks latona, I'll try that. I'm not cooking for any Jewish folk, just me the apostate; I just happen to like Jewish food.

Jeez...didnt know there were so many rules to eating food....whats with that? I just thought they couldnt eat pork and everything had to be kosher....whats the reason for no meat and dairy at the same time?

hmm...I always thought they had lamb at passover, only because "sUPPOSEDLY" when Jesus and the disciples went to Jerusalem for passover apparently the disicples were having a shit fit cause there wasnt going to be any lamb and its not passover without lamb.

Which comes to my next question:
If Jesus and the disciples celebrated passover, how come Christians don't?

It's based on the line: "Lo tochel g'di b'chalav emo" [Literally, don't cook a kid (baby goat) in it's mother's milk].

No one really knows what that means. Ethiopian Jews interpret it as a prohibition against eating veal (an animal that is still suckling). But most interpret it to as a prohibition against eating milk and meat together. This was extended over the ages to also prohibit using the same dishes for meat and dairy products. Religious Jews also wait between 3 and 6 hours after eating meat before they eat milk (lest they should mix in the stomach!)

There's a joke about that one:

Moses is on Mt. Sinai and gets to the line: "Lo tochel g'di b'chalav emo".

God asks: Do you know what that means?
Moses: Yeah, don't eat milk and meat together.
God: Nope
Moses: Don't eat milk and meat together and have separate dishes for milk and meat.
God: Nope
Moses: Don't eat milk and meat together and have separate dishes for milk and meat and wait six hours bwteen eating milk and meat.
God: Fine, have it your way.

I guess it's not that funny unless you have to deal with it personally.

kat, on a side note, I'm in the 5th week of a Jewish lit. class and it's--so far--the most interesting class I've had in college...my prof.'s really cool, and I didn't know jacksh*t about the Jewish religion before...he says the craziest things!!

Anyway, like I said, this is a side note, and DOES NOT REALLY PERTAIN AT ALL TO THE TOPIC AT HAND!!

Sleep tight!
