If everyone believed in God we'd have no reason to have any laws....

This country was founded with a strong belief in god and look how blacks were treated.
Thats just one example that shows that even people that do believe in god are capable of terrible activities.

of course there would be laws. people interact with each other in positive and negative ways, the negative ones tend to be the basis of laws right? if everyone was sweet as pie to each other, there would be no need for laws against murder, theft etc. laws are just a means of saying, "hey most of us dont like what happens when someone does this" and so they pass a law.

what does god have to do with drinking and driving?

what does god have to do with underage drinking?

statutory rape?

etc. only ones that may have any basis are the ones taken from the bible, quran or torah or other such religious books.

naturally there would be. if there were no emotions there would be no laws though.

treating blacks badly wasn't considered wrong when it was actually happening. that is true of most of the things our society considers evil. the inquisition, kkk, nazis, slave trade, all these things were either condoned or endorsed socially & religously when they were actually happening. for all we know, something we are doing right now that we consider totally acceptable will be looked at the same way we look at the nazis.

back many years ago, maybe not. religion was, for one part at least a guideline on how someone should conduct themselves. both islam and judaeism state no pork, and they both come for a middle eastern area where pork is unhealthy in that climate. they provided a vital step to the culture we have now. perhaps not totally necessary but the road to where we are now as a civilisation might have been slower

This country was settled by people with a strong belief in God. Our founding fathers, while men of faith, based our system of government on more secular lines.

Of course. Even if no one believed in God, I doubt there would be total chaos. Most of us have individual interpretations of right and wrong regardless of a belief in a higher being. I don't believe in God, but I don't go around breaking laws and disturbing the peace. I'm a highly moral person because I like the feeling of being "good" according to my own standards of goodness, not because I have a duty to God or anyone else for that matter. And I'm fairly certain I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I agree, i dont have a belief in a higher being either, yet i am a very decent person, and have never broken a law before(well except for small stuff) it just boils down to your values i think.
