I'm going to ask for a $6/hr raise tomorrow. Sounds like much, but if you knew what I was doing and how much I was being paid for it, you'd say it was little. Any advice on how I can conquer the a) bullshit excuses or b) the whining about how much it is?

THANKS!

well..when was the last time you had a raise? I never have asked for a raise, but then again i have a shitty job right now. I just dont care about .15 cents or whatever my cheap ass boss will give me. We're supposed to get one every 3 months but i havent had one since the summer. Just be nice about it and tell him you have been working hard and would like for him to consider giving you a raise. If he thinks 6$ is too much, then go for 4-5$. If hes a good boss then he'll see that youve been working hard and will understand that you deserve a raise.

Last time I got a raise I THINK was around August... maybe a bit later. It's just kind of awkward asking for such a large raise when my past raises have only been in increments of $1. Feels kind of like asking a girl out, lol.

Warik, are you in a field that is in high demand? If so, you'll have a much greater chance at a large raise simply because your employer may not be able to replace you quickly should you decide to walk. What kind of leverage do you have? Do you have other companies interested in you, would you be willing to part ways with your current employer? This goes along with demand, do you think you could increase your salary to the range you're asking if you were to put yourself on the market? Most people think of raises being based on merit, but they don't have to be entirely. If you're in a job where you're making what you feel is a below-market salary, you can sometimes get a hefty raise if you've got some leverage on your side. I read somewhere a few months ago that it costs an employer on average $10k to replace a white-collar employee when recruiting and training expenses are factored in.

A little personal experience currently happening to me. I'm a network contractor for a consulting firm. The client I'm working has been making overtures about hiring me directly for the past few months, but their contract states that they have to wait 6 months in order to hire me without compensating my employer. When they were openly advertising this position, the upper-end of their salary range was approx 45% higher than my current salary. I know I've been underpaid for the past year because my employer has been billing clients double what they're paying me for actually doing the job. I was due a raise last month but am avoiding going in for my annual review until I get this other offer at the 6 month point. Then I'll have my leverage. My current employer can then come close to matching my offer or I'll walk. If I walk, they lose not only an employee but they also will lose the contract because that position will be permanently filled.

To me, the key to getting a big raise is not only to demonstrate your value to your employer, but also to be in a position where you aren't taking much of a risk by making your employer think they'll lose you if they don't keep you happy.

somec,

Field of high demand? Possibly, but I have no place else to go. I'm working for this guy from my home and only part-time during the week. Basically, I'm a web developer, server administrator, web PROGRAMMER, and I take care of whatever computer trouble he's having on his blasted Macintoshes - for a whopping $9/hr. Minimum for a web programmer is $15, at least. Minimum for a web programmer + all of that other crap = more than $15, but I'm only looking for $15 now.

Am I replaceable? Certainly... but am I replaceable for less than $20 or $30/hr? No way.

That's my leverage. It'll cost more to replace me than to raise me, and he's really stuck without me. I'm in the middle of finishing a project which will really simplify everything by a factor of like 1,000,000, and if I leave or suddenly become overly lazy, the project will never get done.

I know that he knows that I deserve a big raise based on merit alone. Looking back at how his business was going a year ago when I started working for him, there is no way he would have gotten this far without me. I'm leaving in a few minutes to go pick up my paycheck and go for it... you'll all hear of my success or failure within a few hours.

Cool.

What's up with the Mac's?

Apple's virtually a Microsoft subsidiary now anyway - Microsoft writes all their code and has rights to it for a 5 year period.....get those fuckin things out of there.

Shagwell,

You want a cut?

There are a number of positions available at my job. I work out of my house, and my computer is in my room. I repeat, there are a number of positions available. Please inquire at the front desk. =)

JohnnyO,

I am currently a reclusive hermit and have no intention of leaving my house unless it is for a physically godess-like beauty who is interested in lead me on for a few weeks. Sorry

Matt,

The Macs suck - that's what's up. When I went today to get paid, the boss was like: "Wow the computers are running very slowly today. Why do you suppose that is?"

Me: "Uhh, they're Macs."

Then he got mad and claimed that they were really fast blah blah blah. A while back when he was planning on buying 2 new computers (aka Macs), I suggested that he just buy 4 bare bone PCs and sell the Macs to a junkyard or something. It would not have cost a penny over $4,000 including monitors.

No dice. 2 more Macs in the office and bigger headaches for everybody. One of them can't even run Outlook Express.

Oh well, at least I have a monstrous PC at home on which to do my work. If I had to do my work on the Macs, then I wouldn't need a raise cause it would take forever!

Rumor has it that Shag is a physically godess-like beauty. Perhaps we can form a compromise... lol.

I'd like to go out and have some fun, but it usually doesn't turn out that way. Too many previous bad experiences. I think I might have grown up too fast or something. I know almost exactly what I want in a woman, so I never ask any girls out because of the slightest imperfections, and I never go out with my male friends because one lives an hour away, the other is ultra high 24/7, and the other and I have more fun staying home playing QuakeIII and talking about how our respective bosses are giving us the proverbial ass-ramming in the paycheck department.

Pathetic, eh?

yeah you summed uo my take on MACs.

Hey just curious - why are you working for a place like that? Is it because you can learn a lot - sounds like you have a lot of responsibility.

Matt,

I don't really know why I'm working for a place like this. Even though the money isn't that great, I'm in it for the money. I'm a 19 year old college student who, on the typical day, leaves home at 10am and gets home around 6pm. What profitable jobs are available after 6pm? None. After 6pm, I'm working the night shift at a fast food restaurant or bagging groceries for the late shoppers.

The job HAS been a learning experience. I've learned stuff from how search engines work to PHP programming to working with SQL etc. I've even used a fax machine once or twice.

Someone my age with my availability isn't going to get himself $9/hr like I was getting for just any job. Now that I've gotten a raise, it's even better. The job security is great, too. Honestly, no self-ego boosting intended, I helped the company out of the pits. In Dec of '99 they had half of a website and getting almost no business. Now, they have a full website (although a crappy one because they refused to allow me to redesign it. I was only allowed to update it.), and about 10x the website traffic (although it's not impressive by any means, yet). I don't think I have to worry about being out of a job unless I quit.

Now that I've been exposed to having money at my disposal, I don't see myself being without it. I will cry the day that I see something that I want and I have to tell myself: "We can't buy it. We're tight on cash." Never again.

Speaking of which, that music at my gym is quite possibly the most annoying cacophony I've heard in my life. I think it's time for a portable mp3 player. ;-)

Don't demand an immediate raise.
Tell them that a specific date in the near
future you expect x $.

That way you presure them without threats or an ultimatum that always makes you loose power.
