Who else is running seti@home on their computer?
I've crunched my way through 1200 hours as of today.

SETI means 'Search for Extraterrestrail Intelligence'
SETI@HOME is a programme you d/load that allows you to analize(sp) data from a radio telescope that is listening for signals that are not natural.
I think there are over 2 million people using the programme .

I'm running SETI on a Sun E450 with quad procs at work....
The only thing the machine does (other than SETI) is DNS, LDAP....hehe overkill

slickdadd - did you ever see the movie contact? currently around the globe there are many radio telescopes pointed up at various regions of universe and they are pulling in what in most scientific circles is considered to be "a buttload" of data. they then store it in a database, but the computing power needed to look at all of it is staggering. so they wrote a client that will run on your computer and sit in the background and when your computer isn't doing something (which is most of the time - normal computer use really doesn't tax the processor at all), it will then work on the data it downloads to look for a pattern that may or may not be something that could be communication to us (basically something that isn't white, pink, or whatever kind of noise you want). it then sends that back to a different database.
this way we can try to determine if there is life out there trying to instant message us.

I personally have my reasons for not doing this (not that I don't think life other than our planet is feasible - I just have several reasons as to why the project is a waste of time). My own personal interst is cryptography and I run the distributed.net client on my machines.

there are several places doing the distributed computation thing and there was even a brief surge in companies coming out that are trying to make money off of it - from what I've read, this isn't the end of it yet. who knows.

I suspect there is a more efficient way of communicating than radio, thus a advanced species wouldn't use radio for communication.

well, when you say radio - that is a pretty fricken big swath through the energy spectrum that you are talking about - so it is a pretty good way to communicate - but there are more efficient and cooler ways in quantum machanics - but will another life form out there be using that? who knows - perhaps that other lifeform is just mold spores on a moon somewhere five solar systems away.

I think SETI is bull shit. First of all, UFOS are always abducted humans every day, mostly future Jerry Springer guests (trailor trash.)
IF aliens wanted to send signals from their ships or something they would of already done so.
Fact is that the E.T. Spacecrafts do appear on RADAR, however they dont send a signal, so the SETI program which is set up by the government or whoever is all smoke and mirrors to make people think that the Government is actually trying to establish contact with extraterrestials, where in all honestly the government has already made contact with aliens since the early 1940's but refuse to admit it.
MAJESTIC 12 ring a bell to anyone?
