I know I wanna do something with the armed forces, but I wanna go to college to be a lawyer. Is ROTC any good? What are the details on it?

It is a great deal. First, they pay your tuition and give you a small stipend. In return you must take some officer training classes and do various other activities. But it's not that difficult...I had a friend who did ROTC and pledged a fraternity at the same time. It is the easiest way into the officer ranks. The Navy, for example, will pay for your law school after you finish with your bachelors. Afterwards, you owe them something like 4 years as a JAG. But you get the experience and training that comes with being an officer plus a fair salary and no loans to repay. You will typically get hired quickly into a large law firm if you choose to get out.

JUst as bchemist said..But let me add to it. I know first hand about Army ROTC the will give you the stipend every month i am not sure how much it is now but it is a few hundred. Your school is paid for if you qualify for there scholorship which must do if they apply and have a fair GPA in H.S. You can then apply for the JAG program in the Army depending on your college qualifications, if you are excepted they will pay for law school and you owe the army 6 years. YOur commisioned as a captain which is pay grade 0-3 base salary around 60,000 with all pays than you get a specialty pay for being a lawyer about another 20,000 a year. The best thing is the experience and the fact that in the army a lawyer dosent need insurance incase your client decides to sue you...Its a great deal..

I am thinking about going ROTC as well. I had a thread a while ago listing all the schools with the Navy ROTC program if you want to look it up in the archives.

It's a great deal man. My friend is going to law school at Wisconsin and isn't paying a dime. He also gets a $200 stipend each month. You have PT three times a week before class at 6:30 but otherwise it's a cakewalk. Wish I'd considered it 2 years ago.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'm probably gonna go Army b/c I don't like open waters [Fear of sharks]. Yeah I know its weird. Plus w/ the army I'm into that type of style. Completely intrigued by the art of snipering.

What requirements are needed for the scholarships? My GPA has been pretty damn good, 3.6-7, throughout highschool.

Whats JAG?

The 6 years can be done partial too right?
Making 80 grand coming out would be sweet.

Sailor Girl, what college are you thinking of going to? Also what major? I'm probably going to go to Drexel for 4 (under grad) and Rutgers for 3 (law). I'm pretty sure both offer NROTC and AROTC.

I'm still not sure. Texas A&M is looking good.

JAG = Judge Advocate General or a military attorney.

Good luck on making that choice. If you want to go to Drexel for law school then your test scores to get into Law school must be good...To get into any decent law school it takes good test score, good college grades, and alot of luck

Rex,

I would say I am the "subject matter expert" for the board on this topic. I did it, and I'll tell you the real deal...the good and bad.

I have a good friend who is working on getting into JAG now, so I know about that side of the game too.

email me.

There is an old joke I heard long time ago in dealing with what you learn in Officers School. It goes something like this. There is a flag pole about 35 feet high. The flag pole has a ball on top of it, that needs to be painted gold, but the pole has been painted already in white, and they forgot to paint the ball. The colonel asks the lieutenant, what should be done in this situation. The lieutenant suggests to get a ladder. The colonel says, "no good, it might scratch the pole and we ran out of white paint." The lieutenant suggests to have somebody hang from a heli and paint it. The colonel says, "no, too much work involved." Then the colonel says, "look you only have one hour and secretary of defense is going to be present." "This is what you have to do and this is what you will learn most valuable hear." The Lt. says, "yes sir what is that?" The colonel says, "this is what you do, you find the sergeant closest to you" and say, "sergeant the ball on top of the flag pole has to be painted gold, you have 1 hour to do it and don't scratch the pole."
