Such great physiques back in ancient times?

A friend of mine gave me an art book, and there were lots of pics of Greek and Roman statues. These guys may not have been as "symmetrical" as the standard of todays physique, but they were pretty damn big considering the barbell or dumbbell hadnt been invented.

How the hell did they get to look like that? Its not like there was a Gold's down the road.

For Back-they pulled block of stone, great lat development
For Chest-they pushed blocks of stone
For legs-they carried smaller blocks of stone on their back
Everything else just fell into place, in Egypt, Prince Weider made the first whey products.

I don't think oatmeal or MetRx bars were very popular back in Greek times. I dont even know if they had invented souvlaki yet.

Did they know what a sriloin steak was?

Did they drink water?

These are modern substitutes for proteins such as fish and chicken. And Yes steak cuts have been around for thousands of years.

I still dont understand how they could get cut back then. I mean, I used to do manual labor and back then, I had mass, but zero definition. I am now the same size again that I was then, but I now have definition as well as mass....I just can't get my head around it.

Most of the men at one point or another were in the military during the Greek and Roman times.

The physical abilities required of someone in the military was unbelievable, to say the least.

When they were campaigning they were required to carry enough provisions for two weeks, plus there shelter's, weaponry and so on. They went just about every where on their own two feet.

They trained continuously, ever watchful of the enemy. Plus, they competed in games, similar to the olympics of today.

What they considered a normal everyday life, we would consider extreme training. Let's face it, our society has become a lazy fat ass, that can barely move from couch to bed without whining about it.

They got into that type of shape by training with 50+ lbs of armor strapped to their backs.

Slickdadd nailed it....all of the artisans in ancient times made their sculpted human forms as flawless as possible. Like everyone else said too, there were no fries and bullshit like that around. If you were fat you were considered wealthy in ancient times, so anyone with a defined ripped look was either a warrior, laborer/slave, or a dirt farmer or something else like that of low status..

I would not say of low status because until late in Roman history were required to pay for their own armour. Therefore, ony the wealthy had excellent armour and the poor and destitute had little to no armour.

The armour for even the highest of ranks in the Roman Army weighed in at ony about 12-15 pounds. Less than what a modern cop wears for equipment every day on the job.

It was the rigors of training that gave the physique. The Gladiators, while most were slaves, were the most sought after by the women, becuase they did have the best builds, they were winners, especially if you survived for any length of time and given that, you would be desired for the best genes to give the best offspring. As well as the best pleasure.

It was not the poor who had the ripped physiques but those with money, whether a little or a lot, becuase they could afford food and medicine. Not unlike today.
