The best way to remove any version of Windows... at least the way that's been best for me... is to back up all necessary data and FORMAT THAT BABY. No joke.

Just copy anything that you need to copy, boot into DOS, then simply type "format c:/s" and confirm. Takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the size of your drive. Then just install Windows on the clean hard drive.

I'd agree. just backup everything on a ZIP or on a CD and format the drive.

there is really nothing simpler, or more efficient. save yourself a headache and just "ice it".

The /s parameter tells it to add all of the necessary system files to the C: drive like command.com and the rest of its friends, otherwise, you wouldn't be able to boot off of the C: drive and would need a boot disk.

You can also get a program called cleansweep that removes it without losing or having to backup any of that stuff. Dont know a lot of details but thats what it does.

I sometimes have problems with my W98. I didn't format the drive 100% before I installed W98. I used a sweeper but it only formatted 25%. Could my problems be from not formatting the drive fully?

i normally just do an fdisk and remove the partition that is existing. then create a new one. it will prompt you to make it a particular size.. i use the full size otherwise it will only see 2.0G. even if your computer wont boot from the C drive thats no biggee, just set it in the bios to boot from the cdrom and put in your win98 disk and it will start from there. win998 will format for you so no need to format c or whatever. the setup is pretty much foolproof, even if you are booting from the cdrom, you can go and change it once you are finished installing win98. hope that helps.

*ah the trials and tribulations of giving a "clean" computer to my mom for xmas, it has a way of making things familiar....especially installing windows. hehe. (i couldnt just give her a computer full of porn now could i?)

I have problems when re-booting and it sometimes runs slow for 128MB RAM. I have about 25gigs of free space too.

Hmm. I dont think the formatting should really have anything to do with that. You could always try defragging it all if you havent before. Mine was the same way and that really helped it quite a bit. If you already have, im not quite sure. May just be a little quirk with your computer.

how much shit is running in the background?

i find that makes a big difference for me too. if you have a grip of stuff running, try shutting them down. most of the time they are running and you dont know it. check your task manager (ctl, alt del) and that will let you know whats really going on.

The uninstall/install went ok... a little problem at the begining after formating the c drive..it didn't recognize the CD rom drive..I had to go to the setup (hitting delete while its booting up) and change the boot order to the CD rom first..that got the CD rom going and the Win 98 install...went in with no problems..then went back the floppy..thanks for the help bro's... Like I said..I was a little rusty..

As far as the slowness of the computer...defrag first..Clear windows temporary internet files...and then check what is running in the background like bignate said.. Thanks for the help bro's

glad it went alright.

i had to do the same thing, boot from cdrom and let win98 install a generic cdrom driver. it took me a whole afternoon to get it all to work though. hehe. i should have just asked here first. heh heh.
