I dont understand usally It only takes 2-3 days to get purple on the ketosticks. This time they come out negative. I weigh around 200 and my current deit is this:
60gm pro whey 3 carbs
2TBl flax
1 tsp metamucil sugar free 5 carbs of fiber

2 cans of tuna 3TBL mayo

8-10oz chicken brest 3TBL mayo
2oz Cheeze

Whats going wrong? What should I do to make it go right. should I lower the protien alittle or cut out the cheeze? Does the whey prevent me going in to ketosis? Does it matter if you are in ketosis on the sticks?
Thanks

I would add more fat, at least to 3/4 of your total calories. Also (If you can afford it), try to slam in some ALA until ketosis is established.
some other foods to consider are: Spam, fatty ground beef, Ranch dressing, bacon, etc... Also, a whey pudding mixed with 1-2 Tablespoons of oil and a couple Tbsp of HEAVY whipping cream and a packet of equal is a cornerstone to my diet while following a CKD. Hope this helps man. Oh yeah, the cheese is fine. Just make sure your protein amount is no higher than 25% (actually the lower the protein percentage, the faster ketosis should be established), or at least until it is established, then you can relax a little if you want.

DON'T JUDGE YOUR PROGRESS BASED ON KETOSTIX!!! I squandered what seemed like endless weeks of CKDing by making that mistake.
Now that I am a "seasoned veteran" (LOL) of that diet, I can tell you that ketosis isn't magical. The CKD is great for fat loss because it lowers insulin and bloodsugar, raises HGH and raises natural testosterone levels. It works with a mild to moderate caloric restriction with or w/o ketosis. What's more, even if you're concerned about ketosis, the stix are a piss-poor method of determining it. There are simply too many things that can interfere with the readings. In fact, Dr. Mauro Dipisquale states that once you adapt to low-carb dieting, you should no longer be excretening exess ketones anyway - you should have completely adapted to USING them up for fuel, not having your body piss them out because there is too much of them.

Be careful with the mayo, so brands have alot of carbs, and like he said, get the fat up higher

I don't think so. Ketones are a BYPRODUCT of fat metabolismare they not? If so, as long as your body is using fat for energy, you will excrete ketones. Now if your body can use ketones themselves as energy...then you wouldn't pass them in your urine, but I have never heard of this.

Also, I hate to hear people say, "If you're not in ketosis, eat more fat!" It seems to me that if you eat enough fat, you will simply use the fat you take in with your food as energy, and thus produce ketones in the urine. Those ketones are coming from fat you've eaten, NOT from body fat stores.

I know you have to eat fat to make for lost calories when you're on a low-carb diet, but I think you ought to be wary about producing ketones from fat taken in (as opposed to fat used from bodily stores).

Cheech,

You said you usually get a "purple" reading on ketstix after at least 5 day of low-carbing. But when you dieted before do you think you might have been carrying more body fat? More-body-fat-on-previous-diets would be the simplest explanation to what's going on this time.

Also, I assume your excercise routine is the same as on previous occasions?

I think each person's body has a level of body fat that it just damn-near refuses to go below, period. That's not something anybody wants to accept, but it seems likely.
You could starve below it--I mean like getting into post-concentration camp starved--but obviously that's not what we're after.

Of course, everybody is different. Some people can diet 'till they look totally lean. I myself, am an ectomorph, but still have really stubborn fat around the middle that looks bad (to me that is).

BTW, I think ketostix are the best way to get a day-by-day measure of what's going on with your body's fat metabolism.

I started a low carb diet Aug. 5th at #208. Didn't start with the stix 'till Sep. 4th. (The reason being that I didn't start serious cardio 'till 9/4.) Readings, all taken in the AM were:

trace-small-small-moderate-moderate-moderate (carb garbage eating day!)-moderate-moderate-trace-trace-trace-trace-small-small (carb day again. This time 6 bran muffins and Wheaties in the am. 7 krispy creme doughnuts, a couple of cupcakes, two double cheese burgers in the pm. Yeah, I know...but this is a dietary experiment, right? I'm learning from this.)-today's am keto none (Suprise, suprise, right?)

Maybe you've hit the wall so far as fat loss goes? Are you taking anything?

For myself, I might just eat low GI carbs-say barley grits & protien in milk in the am maybe eod, and cut the garbage day out completely from here on. Then stick to non-starchy vegs., meat, cheese, oil, eggs like I've been doing for the rest of the time. And of course lift (at reduced intensity), and do at least 1hr cardio/day.

Also, I'm on 250 Sust (tapered out as of this past week) & 300 EQ (which I might increase.)

If and when I hit the wall on fat loss, I might try T-3 with AS. Or ephedrine. Or maybe low-dose HGH with AS.

I don't think keto stix work. They always look the same.

To the guy with the two consecutive posts:

have you read Body Opus or Anabolic Diet?
DiPasquale does not recommend that you even worry about ketosis while on 60% fat, 35% protein, 5% carbs - just worry about calories Mon-Fri and eat everything in sight Sat-Sun. Duchaine sais that the only time you should be showing any ketones in your urine is in the morning and that if you are showing them at night, you are eating too much and they are coming from dietary fat, not body fat. Also, the entire Body Opus, which is really the only TRUE CKD (since Anabolic Diet is not based on the premise that the dieter is attempting to achieve ketois during the week, merely a hormonal shift) assumes that you will be in keotis only for three days. If ketosis is the determining factor in the success of a cyclical low carb diet, I have to speculate that its strictest incarnation - Body Opus - would call for more days in ketosis than that.

Also, if you like, I can give you a direct reference to Dr Dipasquale saying that once you've adapted to low carbs, you should not be excreting ketones any longer. It is on an oder issue of T-Mag.

BTW, not trying to flame you, just trying to offer my opnion and personal experience on the necesseity or lack thereof of ketosis while on cyclical low carbs, and to relay what I have read from those who know these diets better than all of us.
