I am around 15-17% body fat I have a 36 in waste, I am big boned and I have large shoulders. Its very hard to diet for me I have strugled from diet to diet gaining the fat. I wish I could have greater disapline. I can run faster and longer than most guys at my gym that are 8-12% body fat even though my waste is few inches bigger. I am very athletic as well. Can some one tell me this why do you have to be lean to be considered healthy? I have a problem obecssing about dieting because I have gained 15lbs? I wish I was lean. I have this phobia the media puts on me.

I feel for ya Cheech. Society puts such silly ideas in our heads. It is easy for me to say to you "just be happy that you are so fit", but you will keep listening to the media and never be happy with what you see in the mirror. If everyone threw away their scales and skinfold calipers, the world would be a better place. Just remember most world class endurance athletes have relatively high %bf compared to your average bodybuilder.

as long as you are not obesse don't worry about it!

If you are running around with dudes at the gym and are waiting for them to catch up, more power to you.

Don't even try a diet unless you can't adhere to it. The food pyramid is one of the oldest "diets" in the country and it is the healthiest. Screw the Adkins diet, Screw the Media. Life is about enjoyment not trying to look like a supermodel who eats 5 rice cakes a day along with her coccaine habit.

Be Healthy, Positive, and keep lifting!

Valdez said it great. Don't forget, your ideas and point of view are only yours - and you change your ideas whichever way you want and think more positive. Anyway, don't care much about what others say. I went thru my adolescence worrying 'bout what people think about me and my look. Now it is not that important to me. More important is what I do think myself. I am the only person livin' my life. Mylo

Whoa there Cheech, I think you're asking two questions at the same time!

Your title was "why does a man have to be under 15% BF to be considered FIT?" But at the same time you're talking about how you expect your self to LOOK.

I'd say being fit isn't the same as "looking good". The two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, nor are they necessarily mutually inclusive.

A fit person can have a pretty crappy-looking body (eg, think of female tri-athletes. To me, they look pretty crappy, anyway.) I would say "fit" = BP, HDL/LDL ratios, liver and kidney function, etc. Stuff that you can't really see.

I honestly suspect that a man or woman can be fit and fat (and I mean big belly, bouncing fat. You know, fat-fat.), that's heresy to say that, I know, but I'll bet you it's true.

Now how to define "looking good"...That's rather subjective, and culturally relative, and I'm not even gonna go into that...

BTW, you don't sound to me like you're "fat-fat". My waist is up to 35" at 6' 195lbs, BF% is..?

BTBTW, I'm trying to lose BF (for the first time in my life at age 36) as well. If only I didn't want women soooo bad! LOL! Wouldn't it be nice to have your own hareem?

Actually by american standards, 15- 17% bodyfat is considered healthy for a man. Any way it sounds to me like you are not so much a bodybuilder as you are an athelete, which in the long run is probably better for you. any way about the dieting part just follow what everyone else says, don't listen to the media listen to your body, since that is what relays your most important information to you.
