Iron Mountain Creative Systems
Bodybuilding and Physique Photo Gallery

Mike Cleven, Photographer
There have been some additions and changes to the gallery in all sections.  Colour pictures have been added to the Kevin O'Toole Gallery and will be added to the other sections as images are available.  The Physique Art & Muscle Portraits Section has been revised into four sub-pages so as to enable faster downloading of that large section, and the Pacific Northwest section has been expanded considerably with the addition of more pictures of athletes from Washington and Oregon (albeit from a few years ago).

Despite my previous intentions to conserve bandwidth as much as possible by providing small thumbnails, I have decided to enlarge thumbnail images throughout the site for easier casual viewing.  Part of the reason for this is the larger screens and faster connection speeds enjoyed by most internet users now; those still using 640x480 resolution will probably find the layout a bit awkward.  As available bandwidth expands, so does throughput.....

Another page featuring this year's WNBF Western Canadas will be added to (or rather, linked to) from this site in the near future.  Also, this entire site will be mirrored at the EliteFitness website.

Features:

Kevin O'Toole
Kevin is one of British Columbia's and Canada's major bodybuilding talents. This is an extensive collection of contest photos showing off Kevin's amazing physique. Kevin has a powerful and massive but still remarkably "classic" structure, which should soon be as well-known among American and worldwide bodybuilding fans as he is in BC and Canada.

BC & Western Canada Athletes
I photographed most of the major British Columbia provincial and qualifying competitions in the years 1991-1995, and the Western Canada Championships from 1992, 1994, and 1995. This section is mostly contest pictures but some are out-of-doors or taken during workouts. Many athletes depicted are also in the Art and Portrait section (see below).

Pacific Northwest Athletes
Athletes in this collection were photographed as competitors at contests in Washington and Oregon. Competitions represented include the Emerald Cup, the Northwest Championships, the Oregon and Pacific Coast Championships, and the Vancouver (WA) Naturals.

Professional & Celebrity Bodybuilders
For the most part, pictures in this section were taken by myself during guest posing appearances by the featured athletes, and so usually do not portray them in top physical condition; selection was based on interesting lighting or posing. Athletes featured include Sharon Bruneau, Phil Hernon, Paul deMayo, Dennis Newman, Paul Dillett, Flex Wheeler, and John Sherman. Bonus: Neat pic of Mike Matarazzo's calf.

Physique Art & Muscle Portraits
This section contains numerous non-contest photos of the artistic variety. Although some of these images may have a sensual, even erotic flavour, there are no sexual or nude images here (there's plenty accessible via other bodybuilding sites). "Muscle portrait" is a term I coined for "shirts off" and other "off-duty" casual pics of some of the local athletes whose contests I've covered.   The page linked to here only leads to four others which may be accessed directly - Abstract Physiques, Muscle Portraits, Casual Pictures, and Action Photos & Context Pics.

Links to other Bodybuilding and Photographic Sites

As stated above, I am trying not to duplicate other efforts to index bodybuilding on the Web and there is no point in wasting webspace replicating good lists that exist already, and which are only a click away. The main links here are to the best major bodybuilding link directories I know of. Other sites listed on my links page are either noteworthy for their creative or informative contribution to internet bodybuilding resources and/or contain the most useful and comprehensive lists of bodybuilding links that I know of. Non-bodybuilding photographic galleries and other artistic sites worth visiting are also listed, as is my collection of scenic and historical photos of British Columbia.

About This Gallery

In constructing my bodybuilding site and photo gallery, I have tried not to reduplicate offerings at the many, many other bodybuilding sites already established. This is mostly an archive of my own photographic work with bodybuilders in the Pacific Northwest region of North America, although its content and scope can be expected to change as I get more shooting done.

For visitors to this site who got here from the rest of my website and who are not fans of bodybuilding should have a look around anyway. I have always had "artistic intent" when shooting, whether at a contest or in a private shoot. Anyone who wants to sneer at supposed steroid "abuse" is invited to click though to any of the many excellent "drug and diet" forums accessible through the links listed below for education on the subject before passing judgement on bodybuilders and their chosen profession..........

It is my belief that some of the best modern physiques are NOT found in the pro ranks, but in the ranks of intermediate to advanced athletes at the regional and state/provincial level. Such athletes rarely get exposure in the major bodybuilding media until they are almost due for promotion to pro status, and many often disappear into local bodybuilding history without ever getting seen or known outside their home areas. Despite their obscurity, it is a truism in modern bodybuilding that such athletes far surpass the physical development and conditioning of competing professionals of 20 and 30 years ago, and as such often possess striking beautiful physiques that deserve commemoration, if not wider notoriety. Many of them, although not as "hugely freaky" as most competing pros and national competitors, are nonetheless marvels of physical structure, some often with striking stage presence and masterful posing. Because of this amazingly wide field of notable bodybuilding talent that until now has mostly been outside the limelight, this site will always seek to feature athletes who are not as well known or who are just beginning to "break through" - or deserve to.

This site is permanently UNDER CONSTRUCTION...........The page designs are basic, and I have tried to avoid the use of extraneous bandwidth use, as an image-heavy page already takes long enough to download and I've only got so much webspace. Photo quality has also been reduced for bandwidth reasons, so images viewed should not be considered representative of the quality of actual photographic prints; it was a toss-up between average image quality and the number of people and pictures I could pack in - I went for the second. There will never be Java or ActiveX animations, streamed marquees, doodads, extraneous and elaborate graphics, or other unnecessary bits of visual and time-consuming junk (except for hit counters) - well, at least until I get more webspace. For more information on bandwidth issues please visit the Bandwidth Conservation Society website.

NB Some images may seem diffuse, off-focus, overly pixelated as a result of JPG compression levels I have used in order to cram everyone in. Please let me know if any are "too far gone" and I will upload a less-compressed version of any poor-quality images or, if you may be interested in ordering a print but wish to see a less-compressed version first, I will e-mail you a copy of the image in question directly.
