Would you be a cop?

Whats the size of the city?

I work the worst part of town with the highest crime rate in the US.......a new achievement for us. I work in a field outside law inforcement but in the court system.....anyway I was asked to get in.

Just not sure.

Yes, I would. I would like to work Internal Review (or the other department that polices the police). I would spend all of my time busting bad cops.

You would not make it past the mandatory time spent as a patrol officer with your anti-police sentiments and attitudes.

i thought about it, but you have to make a choice, a job, or family(wife/kids) don't get me wrong, you can have both, but one will suffer, and it wont be the job. it would be a blast i think, but working od and rotating hours was never my thing.

Maybe I'm just a selfish asshole but why in the hell would I want to risk my life to protect people I don't even know plus get paid like shit?

I would like to be a cop. It is actually a hard job to get, especially since 9/11.

No way

Well, maybe if I got to be a corrupt DEA agent or one of those guys who goes to Kentucky and attacks weed fields so I could be a 'mole' and sabotage their efforts

:lmao:

same departement don't have a mandatory period, especially Federals and european agencies.

Now being a cop is not for everyone. Some prefer to do patrols others investigations. If you're going for the money, forget about that. You won't be happy. The pay check is good but not terrible. BTW 2/3 of the cops now should not even wear the uniform...

i am a cop. i spend most of my time trolling this board, building files on steroid users and the people who sell them. Now the question is.. am i kidding, or am i serious.

I'm lucky because money is not an issue.

I was asked for my investigation back ground. They want me as a detective but I'll have to pull two years beat work before that can happen.......but shit man I'm stomping in the field everyday now.

oh yeah, the pay is not worth your life.

Statistically garbage men have a higher 'on the job' fatality rate than police officers. I think more cops are killed in car wrecks when patroling than are murdered by suspects.

For me, i don't know if i could live with myself and being a cop. Destroying people's lives and whatnot, it would get to me pretty fast. If i were a cop in a big city where real crime occured, then i could do probably do it because i would be protecting people. But in the suburbs the cops are just there to bully & frighten the locals for violating the status quo.

Of course I wouldn't - I'm an intelligent person with strong morals. I could never stoop that low.

You would not qualify to become a policeman. You are too intelligent. Most departments do not hire people that are too intelligenmt because they will often leave and/or make too musch noise.

Look at chesty. He is not a cop anymore and he is a rocket scientist (seriously).

On the other hand, feds (like FBI & RCMP) require smart people.

You're wrong. New recruits have to live up to some tough standards. Most major cities require a bachelor's degree. All of them now have very strict background checks. It ain't like it used to be.

This is from a recent (<10yrs) scientific study.

Background check...LOL That has been in effect since the beginning.

but you realize that the FBI too requires a degree so why would someone go work as a patrol/traffic officer if he can get into the real game ?

just because somebody has a degree, doesn't neccessarily mean they know what they're doing.

i know a couple of guys that have architectural degrees but don't know the first thing about building a house.

obviously this isn't the majority, and this has probably nothing to do with the topic at hand. i'm just bored

Good point. If someone put that much time into getting their degree why not go play with the big boys. Last I heard anyway it was a AA degree.

If I were you cleaner, no I wouldn't do it.

You have enough on your plate.

I'd be Batman.

I know. I read that article too. Some guy with a 130 (I believe) IQ was denied entry into the police department because his IQ was too high. That puts a lot of public faith into the police department when they know that the police department does not hire anybody of above average intelligence.

Hah... adds a new meaning to the "you don't have to be a rocket scientist..." saying.

I would entertain the idea of working for the FBI if I did not have a zillion other interests on my list ahead of that. I'd at least be a real law enforcement official, but I'd have to work for the government still. Yuck.

Police departments have had background checks since the beginning of time. The bachelor's degree comment is laughable. Having a bachelor's degree does not necessarily = being intelligent.

There was this guy in my Windows Programming course two semesters ago who was close to getting his BS and he asked a new question every 10 minutes. Prof. couldn't even finish a sentence. I stopped going to class because of that asshole being so disruptive. I would estimate him as being too UN-intelligent to join the police force, yet he'll have a BS soon.

A BS doesn't mean that someone is smart. It means he sat in a chair for 4 years and took notes. It's very hard to tell if someone is smart, but it's very easy to tell if he isn't.

Most FBI S/As I know are spending all of their time doing background checks on various Federal employees and very little real work. Even before 911, most of their work is about catching embezzlers and other white collar criminals. If you want to be a cop, go to work for a mid size city (1/2 million or so) or a State police agency. I was a cop in a community of about 250,000 were I worked as a patrol officer, Detective and Narc. before becoming a DA's investigator. Now I'm a prosecutor. I loved it all.

Yes, I know from experience if you know what I mean dude. I couldn't be a cop because I could not enforce laws that I do not believe in. They would also ascertain that I would make a lot of noise.
