MM107's Venture to the 5x5. Magazine Covers, Here i Come! ( Pics Inside too)

Hey everyone, As some of you might know, I have been a member here for some Time, (Early 2005 I believe and lurked here way before posting). This has to be THE BEST fitness site around, and I will continue to be a member here, as long as the People and Knowlede stays top Notch.

Quick Breif Story about me: Played Baseball whole life, senior yr came down with severe shin splintz(weren’t call shin splints anymore they progressed to a worse condition) so I had to quit ball. Then I got into Car accident wich demobilized me. Totaled my Volkswagen golf lol. Well DR. told me I would never get away from back pain if im weighing 240. And that’s why my diet adventure started.

Starting Weight & Age: 240lbs / 18yrs old.
NOW Weight & Age: 185lbs / 20yrs
Height: 6’0
Waist: 32inches
Arms: 16inches

Maxes as of June 14, 2006. (On this 5x5 so my maxes should blow out)
Bench: 250x1 raw
Squat: 275x2 belt
Deadlift: 423x1 Raw

These are my 5rep Maxes for The 5x5 program im using:
Sqaut: 251
Bench: 212
Row: Questionalble.
Dead: 376x5
Incline(dumbels) 90x5

I got where I am, through Diet & Exercise. Mostly Diet. There is an inspirational person on this board, AKA *Bunny*, who when I was starting this journey, really took her time to stress the importance of DIET. Her famous line, now circulating around my gym, is “Abs are made in the kitchen”, and Im PERFECT LIVING PROOF.

My Calories are around 3k clean. I try for 40% Protein/ 30% Carbs / 30Fats.
Need any Diet advice, come on in and ask.

Hey everyone, Sorry about not updating the Log in couple days, Been very busy at work, and wasn’t able to type it all out. But here I GO!

I took off from work on Monday to get some sleep, I have plenty of time off still, so I needed sleep or else I would have never caught up for my training.

Monday – AM Cardio Empty Stomach(after nice good Sleep)
Threadmill: 3 min warmup 17min @ Level 7.0
StepMill: 12min @ level 7.0
Threadmill: Hill Course 2 Level 5.0 ( incline went up to 11.0) for 12mins

Went home, Ate Clean/Big. Went back to Gym to work 5x5 program.

Monday – PM Weight training.

Part of 5x5.
Sqaut: 119x5 , 149x5, 179x5 , 209x5 , 239x5
Bench: 100x5 , 130x5 , 150x5 , 175x5, 205x5
*Glen pendeley Row 90 degrees: 90x5 , 135x5 , 160x5 , 185x5 , 210 , 90x8
4 sets of Weighted Hypers.( 25lbx10) X 4

*(The row is the only part of the 5x5 program I have to recalculate. Started way too low. The above weight is MY new random progression I used for the day, will work it out)

Added Excercises
**3 sets of Incline Benching: (55lbs x 20) X 3
1 set of Incline Fly’s w/ 35lbs.

**(Incline Benching was for Mental Pump, BigT said I would be able to add them w/o a negative effect)



Tuesday – OFF. Was going to go in for cardio, but took off since Monday was preety decent with the AM cardio + Pm workout.

Today is
Sqaut / Incline Bench / Deadlift

Added Exercise
Chinups
Rear Delts – A Power Lifter at the gym took a peek at my routine ( honestly my gym is very friendly, and I know a lot of the PL’s for the fact I am soaking in all the knowledge I can) He loved the fact that im so young and learning how to train smart. He mentioned he seen NO REAR delt work. Front part is worked benching, etc. But he said to hit my rear delts at least 1x after looking at the routine. I can throw in a simple machine for this, so it would be quick. BUT I NEED TO KNOW IF ITS NECESSARY, OR WILL IT DAMAGE Results?

All my numbers for the Sqaut / Incline / Deadlift are Correct. They are “hard” workouts. But I can make it through them. Last week was so so with sleep so I know I wasn’t 100%.
 
As someone that screwed it up my first run thorugh I strongly suggest droping the extra stuff and runing the program as is the first time through, or at least till you get to your PR weeks...

What are your 5rm maxes, do you know them or are you just estimating?
 
i actually know the 5rep max. The only one i guess was the ROW, and now im tweaking it still. I never maxed out on the ROW so i underguessed myself.

The extra stuff is real simple stuff tho, the extra incline on monday was just for the mental "pump" im trying to break out of.

You are right, i wouldnt go in an off day and bang out isolation work at all.
Im really gonna stick to the 3days week. My body will need the rest =]

Pendlay Rows will destroy your rear delts (in a good way). I haven't done a thing to isolate my rear delts and they are bigger now than ever.

Also, I agree with DJ to drop the fluff, extra stuff.
 
MM, the rows are plenty of rear delt work. The 2 or 3 high rep incline sets for mental reasons on Mon are harmless enough, and if it keeps you sane, then do them. I'd keep it to 2 sets of 20 with dumbells though. They really are not necessary, but if you keep it at that, I can't see them hurting you. You just don't want to go overboard adding iso stuff like flyes etc etc every workout.

Adding chinups today should be fine. Then bench/squat/row on Fri and you can do 3 sets of bis/tris each after Friday's workout. But, again, no more, and nothing gay like concentration curls or kickbacks, lol.

Thanks, my progress is mostly diet. 80% of how u look is diet, and 20% how u look is your workout.

Tighten up that diet, and your gains will look just like mine, mine prob look good because im also going down in BF while gaining mass.

I never really checked the older pics out, and I didn't know you were up to 240 at one point.....you've made great progress and it shows lots of discipline, and you're 100% right about diet dictating how you look....just remember, when ramping up your lifts, training is 99.9% of it and diet is just a personal lifestyle choice, diet only matters to the point of eating ENOUGH in the strength game.

Oh yea, DEF BigT, Eating Clean dictates how Good you look, not how strong you are.

Im def eating more then maintance, so im holding weight well, infact the scale fluctuates from 185-190. So i just say 185 =]

Im def EATING ENOUGH CLEAN cals.

Example yesterday for dinner, HAD 3 BIG BURGERS of 99% Lean Beef. =]

And all my shakes, oatmeal, etc. It will add up to about 3k, on paper, wich in real life turns out to be little more probably.

Yea BigT! I was 240lbs my biggest. Thats why i prob got a strong core, from lugging all that fat around.

I cant wait untill i "dirty" bulk again in winter time. THATS WHEN MY Numbers will really fly.

Like what you have done with your thread. I'll be keeping tabs on ya since I am starting my 5x5 this week as well. Good luck and drop by my thread from time to time to give me your take on things!
 
Well see I am about strength right now thats why my diet is not a strict. I eat REAL clean to the average joe but not to you crazy fucks. And my stregnth has went threw the roof. I dont want a 6 pack. A strong outline and massive. I think BiggT look mroe then Bruce's... its just personal pref.
 
On those rear delts, if you don't like bent-over raises, you can try face-pulls. They're a good, quick exercise I sometimes finish my upper body workout with. If you're unsure how to do these, I'm sure several of the powerlifters at your gym could help you. I'd have to agree with the others, though. New program means sticking to the basics untill you can assess where your strengths and weaknesses are.

Asshole sgt cop. Plus NY it takes forever to get through the system. 21hrs for me =[

Will comment, didnt get a GOOD sleep, but i did get rest, and i did manage to get alot of food. lol Will keep everyone updated

Haha been there done that. Not for a suspended and not in NY. But plenty of times. ;) The Sleep sucks unless you are really going to be in for awhile and they give you a shitty(but nicer) matress and blanket. You gotta love the paper think plastic balnket.... god how I hate those. How the hell did you get plenty of food!?

City, theres no such thing as a matress and blacnket in bookings lol i wish,

I just got out of the gym, so i was in a wife beater and fuckin shorts, freezing inside. lol

Plenty of food = no one would eat PB sandwiches, WELL i know PB is in my diet(sort of) so i had people give me thiers. IT was funny. Horrible 21 hrs but its the 2nd time so i knew what was going to happen.

Imagine NYC, and they were doing sweeps for weed and stupid shit so there was a TON of fuckin people in there. I got bruises on my hip, shoulders, and back from sleepin on that floor.

Amthrax, i tried bro, he told ill get over it, i told him to fuck himself lol jk
 
haha bookings here can take a whole 15 min. I must have at least 10 mugs. :) wish I could get a copy of those. My ex used to live in NY... worked at the starbucks accross from the empire state building. If you see a girl with brown hair, with the name beth. Slap her and tell her she deserved it.

Hey Everyone, BIG UPDATE! Sorry for not having one in a couple days.


Arrest Story:
Reason for Arrest: Suspended License ( only suspended for 12hrs, not even 24 )

Ok, So here I am, just got out of the GYM. Wife beater and shorts is all I have on. So im rolling some bud. I see a police car coming down the block. THE WRONG WAY, wich already tiped me off they seen me. So instead of sitting there like a dead duck, I drove off, The police car let me by, but in order to follow me, they would have to do a U-turn. So I had time to actually get out of my car, hide my bud under another car, and drove off.
Needless to say, they catch up to me and pull me over. They tell me, they KNOW I sell drugs (stereotyped me because of my car, basically, saying it was too nice for me) Basically rip my car apart head to to. Cant find no WEED at all. So instead of being on their way, the SGT is really being an asshole to me. So they run me, suspended license, less then 12hrs. They bring me in like assholes, leaving my girl their like pieces of shit.

Go to bookings, wouldn’t let me get my clothes, so I had to sit there all night (21hrs) freezing in nothing but thin ass clothes. So 21hrs pass, I see the judge, and they dismiss the case because the police should have known better then to bring me in since I was only suspended for 12hrs, (this is the gray area im guessing) So now I KNOW the SGT was being a pure asshole.

And you know what blows? I just did an intense 5x5 day, and needed my sleep/food to recover, and but were shitty.

BUT THAT’S my story in short. It was A LOT WORSE than that. But I don’t want to remember them too much =]

Oh yea, and i had to pay 300$ to lift the suspension because NYC put me into a defensive drivers program and it was 100$ per point. ON TOP OF A 150$ ticket i paid =[. Looks like NYC is all about $$

Cardio was low due to the arrest really throwing my mentallity off and had to get back on track. Thank god I got my ECA stack in, wich def helped keep the metabolism moving.

FYI, for future reference, don't consent to a search. LoL Also, they're not allowed to search simply b/c they pulled you over for a traffic violation. Not that that matters, but if they HAD found something incriminating, you could've had it suppressed based on an unconstitutional search under the 4th Amendment.

Spend less time smoking and more time reading the Constitution. LoL j/k

There is your free consultation, MM, he charges a hefty hourly fee for anything else.

To look it the best way possible from a training standpoint, at least this happened in the beginning of the program when the weights are relatively light for you, so you won't have issues with missing lifts.

LMAO. I got soooo many stories like this. One almost identicle. And the asshole cop instead of just parking my car had it towed when the other officier ASKED if he could park it. To long of list of stories to right but I feel ya. When you drive a nice/exspensive car.... always roll your shit in the house :p And if a cop sees you and you know you are fucked... eat it, that way you can be high threw the booking faze ;) Cant wait till i can smoke again but its brought me to much trouble. I swear the cops here know my name/car by sight and its not that small of town. The idea of it being an illegal search... not really. A cop can make ANY bullshit he wants in his police report to give him probable cause and that doesnt take much. By the time you would fight it with a good lawyer you would be done more then if you would just pay the fine. Its just a small misdomeanor, fuck it.

exacty, hick is right on this one proto, this is NY, cops do what they would like. His reason for searching the car was " it smells like weed in here" and that was all he needed. I refused of course, but it doesnt matter around here lol

My assitance work On the 3 workout Days.

Monday - Squat / Bench / Row
3 Sets of Barbell Curls x 8 reps
2 Sets of Incline Dumbells (20 rep range)

Wednesday - Squat / Incline / Deadlift
2 Sets of Weighted Hypers
4 sets of Chinups - 2 in front of neck 2 behind the neck (10-12 rep range)

Friday - Sqaut / Bench / Row
3 Sets of Weighted Dips x 5-8 reps
3 Sets of JM Presses (8 rep range)

Monday, The barbell curls are because i havnt done them in a while and they are quick, and shouldnt interfere with my healing. The incline is basically for my "mental" fix.

Wednesday, The hypers should be quick and really finish off lower back, The chinups should finish off upper back so my back should be nice and have several days to recover before another workout.

Friday, I got 2 days off for the weekend, so i figured this is a day where i can play with some accessory work. The dips are on the original 5x5 plan. I want hit triceps hard, since i have 2 days off. THIS IS THE ONLY DAY IM NOT SURE OF DOING JM PRESSES. THE ONLY OTHER EXCERCISE I WOULD LIKE TO DO WOULD BE SKULL CRUSHERS.

Im going to run my ass off tonight. GF wants to run with me, so ill wait for her. Im going to do:
Threadmill: 3min warmup 17min run.
Stepmill: 12mins @ level 7
Threadmill: Hill interval @ 5.0

Im also doing ABS Today, wich I think I forgot to do last week, so im gonna kill them.

Whats up EF? Log update!

Yesterday was an off day (from weight training) So I Hit up some Cardio. Treadmill was a breeze, Stairmaster on the other hand, was a pure battle. But I won!

Treadmill:
3min warmup. 22mins @ LEVEL 7.5! PR Best.
Stepmill: 12mins @ level 7 with 50lb vest on.

The stepmill was harder then usual, but I finished them. I started to get somewhat dizzy, it was probably due to the ECA stack, and low-food around cardio time. BUT I made sure to finish what I started. The stairmaster was a breeze tho, got to 22mins, and pushed it to 25

Notes: Stomach is coming in nicely. Applied YES pre-cardio yesterday and pre-bed for more absorbiton. Im going to apply everyday, before workouts, wether its cardio or weight training. OFF days, I wont use YES. My ECA stack combined with YES should yield really good results since both effect the receptors in the midsection and im hoping the mix will really open the door to belly fat loss.

I was thinking of doing a 5X5 until the guy preaching about it told me "professional BB's know NOTHING about working out and training, they just have great genetics and use tons of steroids." I about lost it. Although it does make sense, I might try it next time I am off. But my recovery time right now seems to be around 12 hours. :evil:

Just thik about it, if your recovery is that good you could be adding 5-10lbs (or so) to the bar every week for quite some time on the 5x5.


it does feel wierd the first few weeks (even in the OR weeks) whn you know you have a few more reps in you but you stop at 5. it all works out though.

I am adding 5-10 pounds with the training I am doing if not more. I also love the burn/pump, it like a release of all my anger/aggression/stress. Its just as much as a mental game as it is physical for me. One day Ill give it a try. Maybe in a couple months.

That is impressive, of course, it it ain't broke, don't fix it...

It is good to know that if/when your current training stalls you have a proven template, routine or what ever you want to call if (5x5) to try.

Well it all depends on what day. Sometimes it felt too easy, then it started to get really hard, but I've kept progressing. I just did Monday of week 6 and I didn't get the heavy set of 5 for bench, tried again and got it. It's getting harder. Really hard. I think I will keep progressing though.

At times, during weeks 1-4 I'd be saying to myself "This is too easy" then at other times I'd be saying "Shit, if this is challenging five times, how am I going to break PR's?" But it all ends up working. I've squeaked by for the past few weeks barely.

Heh, your going by the age of this thread, i started the 5x5 for 1 week before that, and didnt totally skip week 1, just started mid week, so week 1 was half assed. Last friday was END of week 2, Monday that just passed was begining week 3.

I know its confusing, but consider week 1 fucked up lol, SOOOOO if i feel great at the end, i can always go couple more weeks bumping the weight each day =]

Hella a good job bro. Every type of training/diet you do it seems to go perfectly. Its fuckin wild. I mean you cut... and you get real lean. You bulk and you put on some serious size and a little fat. Your body is constantly changing and in the right direction. Fuck the 6 pack.. get big.

Yea, it basically is my food i eat. Thank god for some odd reason i just dont mind eating like i do. I like my 6pac! lol its coming in without me really trying too much. I think "bulking" is harder for me then cutting, since i have TO EAT SO DAMN much.

But for the summer hick, ladies love the pac lol. But after my 5x5, and winter time is HUNGRY MAN 1lb of FOOD lunches. lol

My strenght is still going up, or else i would say FUCK it, and eat big, but since im still gaining, i dont mind much.

Yea.. I guess I dont know what I am missing because I havent had one sense I was like 7. I know what you are saying about bulking. I am in the habbit of eating clean and started noticing I wasnt gettin 4000 cals in more like 3000. So I bumped up the food intake and now realize how much that really is.... Hard. Your arms are lookin real solid. Your chest get itchy from shaving all your shit all the time. BOHAHAHA. Can tell you where once a furry guy.

Have you taken updated measurements at all? I ask b/c after 1st cut ... I added 2" to both Upper legs & calves when I was told initially I needed 2” to come off of them (for pics) … that sure as hell changed .. point: since my previous cut those 2 " didn’t MOVE, the tape measurements, yet I completely reshaped my legs .. as you've seen ... If you see & FEEL progress, I don't want you to get discouraged b/c a # or #’s don’t go your way ... :) Chicks are notorious for that :) and some really obsessive guys .. makes me wanna pull out these pretty red curls … :D

Tell the GF to holla when she needs me

hell yea, I was eating hungry men tv dinners while bulking, 1,090 calories each! and that was a LUNCH. Thats how i blew up so quick bulking i guess =]

Ive tried to eat 4k clean and it was hard just like u said, so i haada throw in the hungry men dinners.

I tried the hungrey man dinners and they tasted like rubber.... with some wierd sauce. I rather just cook a 1/2 80/20 beef patty on the grill. I like lean cusine dinners if I have NO time. No persitives and its usally around 20 G protien and like 400-500 easy cals. That with a whole unch of milk and whey does the trick. I usally eat 600-800 meals 3 times a day and have 3 protien shake (whey and a lot of ANPB for calories). Or a muscle milk with some whey and then snack on some Jerky. Thank god for ANPB and whey protien.

Man u didnt like the hungry man dinners? lol i dont like em too much either, but 1090 cals, 53g protein and 12g fat or whatever the numbers were were too easy for me to pass up. Plus they are only 3.00 at the store here lol

i gotta get my fats up, i love jerky too!

Lol... And I forgot about lots of skoal. After a BIG meal when I am bulking or to take away my hunger if I am cutting. I dont know how you cut and still blaze. I like sucking on sour candy when I smoked, took care of my cottonmouth. I am suprised your lifts are going up so fast while you cut.

Im surprised as well, considering everyone keeps telling me i cant cut and get bigger at the same time. I PERSOANLY beleive this, but to an extent, i think if im eating high protein late night, while my body rest i feel i can put on lean mass while dropping some BF, WICH EVERYONE TOLD ME WAS IMPOSSIBLE, I know its hard, but impossible? nothing is impossible. BUT IT TAKES ALOT OF DIET DISCIPLINE!

I usually blaze, right after the gym. So, basically 45mins to blaze. I down my PWOS before i blaze, so by the time im home and have the munchies, its dinner time. And i can EAT EAT EAT as long as its CLEAN =] and who said weed was bad! lol

Then shower... blaze again and EAT and sleep like a baby....... thats the life. I miss the laughs that make my stomach hurt.. memories. Maybe if one day we meet up at the arnold classic or something we can all BS. Ill be there next year for sure.
