Incline Dumbells Vs Incline Barbell for the biggest chest (My new journal)

BiggT

Haha.....to answer the question that just won't die about incline d-bells v incline barbells, here it is.....IT DOESN'T F-ING MATTER, lol.....now down to business.

I am going to be training on Thursday nights and Sunday mornings. With law school I've been burried in readings and work, and this way I can fit 'em in and not have to cut into study time. Also, some fags blog and journal about school, so I can certainly journal my lifting online.

I was batting around twice a week workouts for a few weeks, Keith Wassung, the Chiro / general badass always writes about them, and I can really do all I need to do in 2 days, so here goes.....

Sun. 2/11/07

Behind-the-neck push press: bunch of warm-ups, then 225x5x5

Hang Clean: bunch of warm-ups, then 275 x 5 sets of 3

Jump Shrug: 315x8, 405x8, 475x8 (this should get better, I haven't done them since before Xmas)

Front Squat: warm-ups, then 300x5x5

Flat D-Bell Bench (with palms facing each other) 95's x 3 sets of 10

Hammer Curls: 55'sx8, 60'sx8, 60'sx8

Thats it. Looked real flat when I got up, I even had 2 abs showing on the top, lol, weighed 232 at the gym (still about 6' as that hasn't fluctuated much over the last 12-13 years, lol) , afterwards I went to Arby's and got an XL roast beef sandwich, curly fries and washed it down with chocolate milk, so now I look properly jacked.

The gym is cool. There is a lot of frat boy type lifters, but I like them because (1) they avoid the squat rack like the PLAGUE, so it's always open, (2) they play good music, and (3) they're always willing to spot on the bench or incline.

I'm off to the library from 4-10, but I will keep this updated after Sun/Thurs workouts.

good to see you back young buck...lotta volume spread over 2 days

That's how you hit the inner chest, bro.

Good to see you're making time for a journal. Give yourself something productive to do besides bury yourself in books. LoL :theshadow :jenscat :artist:

proto u seem like a knowledgable bro maybe you can help out another bro in great need for some help:
inner bicep's peak

Tony, how long did it take you to finish your workout?

Good luck with your studies, BiggT. The gym will always be there waiting for you whenever you need it.

One problem I've always found with working 2x per week is that eventually I get fully deloaded and have to make a big effort to get enough volume in to make any kind of progress. Usually, I end up choosing something to continue to gain on while allowing the other lifts to drift. I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes for you.

Petpre, it took me just about 2 hrs.

BW.....I'm curious to see too. I have some room to move up the front squats and PPs as I was a little conservative on them.....but so long as I keep my weight around 230-235, I'm not really expecting any kind of mind blowing gains or anything.

Interesting "solution" to the db v. bb debate but it doesn't account for cables and is therefore moot and incomplete. Everyone knows cables = mass :p

Good luck with the new program. Something tells me you'll find a way to get in there more than you think as you adapt to the demands of your new schedule.

You should look into Anp02 or Red Blast if it is mind blowing gains you seek...or NoXplode if you have the cabbage.

So this workout gets done 2x per week? Did';t see any iso work which is a bad idea as you know.

It doesn't get much more isolated than hammer curls.

T, these two-hour workouts far exceed the 45-minute limit for maximum anabolic response established by studies on previously untrained vervet monkeys. Just thought you should know.

Let's not even get into the complete lack of any inncer biceps peak work. Did your subscription to FLEX not get forwarded to your new address????

i said it before and i'll say it again...your a strong mofo lol. those btn push presses are sick!! looking forward to your new logging!

Thursday 2/15/07

Front Squat: 135x5, 135x5, 225x5, 285x5, 300x5, 315x3, 325x3, 335x5, 275x8

Flat Bench: 135x a million, 225x5, 275x5, 315x5, 335x5, 335x3, 335x3, 295x8

Barbell/Pendlay Row: 135x10, 185x5, 225x5, 245x5, 265x5, 275x5

Chins: BWx 11, 10, 10

Incline D-Bells with palms facing in: 95'sx 10-10-10

Standing Alternate D-Bell Curls: 60'sx 8-8-8

Weighed 233.7

Post workout had a protein shake then some baked chicken with stove top stuffing and a couple oatmeal raisin cookies, lol

Nope, it's my period...actually the '5' was a typo I just noticed....it was 335x3, and the bench was 3x3 at 335.....damn lap tops with their small keyboards.

Sun. 2/18/07

BTN Push Press: bunch of warm-ups, 235x5x5

Front Squat: bunch of warm-ups, 310x5x5

Power Clean: bunch of warm-ups, 255x3, 275x3, 280x3x3 (screw the hang, if you need to work a weak point they serve their purpose, otherwise they're a BS lift, in my opinion anyway, lol)

Jump Shrug: 315x8, 405x5, 455x5, 495x5, 425x8

D-bell bench with palms facing: 95's x 15-14-13

Hammer Curls: 65'sx8, 65'sx8, 65'sx8

Forgot to weigh myself.....don't really care either, I'd guesstimate 233, I look very, very lean though.....came home to chocolate milk and chicken breasts and rice.....pizza later, lol

That is a shit load of work buddy. Do you like doing straight sets? I am finding them extremely hard...conditioning, I know, but none the less.

How about he PC's? You catching high or getting down diggity?

Palms facing, huh ...I did that w/ a girl in Matamoros once...never again.

What up, bro?? It is a mind fuck doing straight sets like that....they carry over well to low-volume strength though and they do condition good. As far as the cleans, just the power versions for now, all caught high.

The palms facing thing is just to train my triceps endurance, not because I read an article on t fag, lol, but because triceps endurance has been my lifelong enemy....I could always do plain old d-bell bench and then tate presses, but this works and is more efficient than doing two lifts as opposed to one.

Where's Matamoros? Do you think that girl's still around?

BiggT said:

It is a border town in texas...Mexico via Laredo. Basically 4 hours from Austin for cheap beer/head/drugs/etc was Boys Town. The trip was made quite often believe it or not.

'She' was a filthy prostitute. It was dark, and I was 15 and drunk, but I think she was at least 55. So I think she is retired by now. You can only go down on so many Donkeys before you gotta hang up your boots.

I don't know what bit me in the ass, but I had some free time and the weather was in the high-30's, so it felt like Summer time, lol.....so I went to the gym

Flat Bench: 135x a million, 225x5, 275x5, 315x5, 325x3, 335x3, 340x3, 310x8

Flat D-Bell Bench: 100's 8-8-8-8 (this was a little easy, I am gonna keep these at 100s and strive to run the reps up to about 15)

D-Bell Skullcrushers: 50s x 12-12-12

Weighed 231 and change

Sarge, the weather is crazy.....it was 37 today and I was sweating walking outside, lol....I got used to 25-below windchills.

Al, I do them on a flat bench. I wouldn't think it'd make a huge difference how you do 'em. If I use an incline I do tate presses......I guess it's what you'd call the medial head that needs work with me....I never was a big assistance/accessory movement guy and I hate getting "too cute", so I only do extra stuff as absolutely needed, but on pressing, the triceps are what holds me back, so I make sure to work them....if I don't, I have bars flying out of the starting position lightening fast only to get fucked a few inches from lockout.....so I always have in things like close grips, dips, skulls etc etc

late subscription. good luck with balancing school, training etc. thats a lot of work to cram into a couple days. im sure you can handle it though.

Oh, and nice lifting :)

Mmmmm... and it will be a nice sunny 80 here today. Living la vida TEXAN.

And we want pictures of this 'very, very lean' BiggT.

Havn't updates in a bit....(I was gonna edit, but I am not fixing the typo in honor of my boy, jkurtz, and I'm not typing on a blackberry, so i have no excuse, lol)

Twice a week lifting blows...so I managed 3 times this week, then I think my preferred 4 days from now on, lol....I can make the time.

Thursday night I did:

Back Squats up to 5x385 (haven't done these in ages, felt fine though)

Pendlay Rows: up to 275x5

Chins: bodyweight x 11-10-9

Barbell Curls: up to 135x5 nice and strict, then a set of 12 at 120

Decline situps....2x20

Then today.....

BTN Push Press: 235 x 5-5-4-5-3-5-5 (lol, I felt sluggish today and my timing was off, but the weight wasn't bad, so I refused to stop until I got 5 reps for 5 sets, I don't recommend that though to people as it was probably stupid)

Power Clean: warm-ups then 3x3 at 285 (felt shitty too)

Back Squat: up to 395x3, then 340x8 (ironically my worst exercise traditionally was the only thing that felt good today, even though the poundages make me question whether I had a vaginoplasty)

Jump Shrug: lol, I don't wanna talk about it, but I will.....315x5, 405x5, 455x5, 500x5, 550x1, lol, 500x5 (if you blindfolded me I would have thought every set was with 585)

what else....some hammer curls with the 60s and some decline situps

SHITTY workout, felt sluggish and tired and like I couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time, I am gonna chalk it up to "one of those days"....I got through, thats what counts.

Weighed in at 231 and I can see my abs, lol, if I'd lay off the Tostidos and salsa they might actually look crisp.....I know many will disagree, and that's perfectly fine, but I have to say that so long as you eat your protein a calorie is a calorie is a freaking calorie because I eat mexican food 3 times a week, I eat pizza, I drink milk and a lot of it, I eat cereal, I'm not above fast food either.

Anyway, hopefully a good week of training to come.....so long as I maintain this weight I am not expecting huge lifts, but I still enjoy lifting, I am just not a very strong medium-sized guy......I'm a heavyweight at heart, lol.

for 230 you are still friggin' impressive you bastard, lol.

Nice lifts.

I just want to point out to everyone that this ^^^ (bolded statement) is what is said when you have superior genetics and lift massive amounts of tonage per week :p

Tuesday 2/27/07

Flat Bench: 135 x too many to count, 225x5, 275x5, 315x5, 325x3, 335x3, 340x3, 310x8 (same exact as last week, I am a few lbs lighter though)....I love pressing at 255-260.....at 230 it feels like I am pushing the bar about 100 feet, lol

Flat DBells: 100sx 10-10-10-10

Dbell Skullz: 55'sx 8-8-8-8

Weighed a svelte 229 tonight.......had my PWO chocolate milk and a bunch of hamburger helper

Squeezed in a late one tonight at 9:30 in the PM .....I decided twice a week lifting blows, I like being in the gym too much for that. Lifting is just my drug of choice and i actually study better when I am training more often.

Power Clean: a ton of warm-ups, then 10 singles at 295.

Back Squat: 225x5, 315x5, 335x5, 365x5, 395x5

Chins: BW x 11, 10, 10

Hammer Curl: 70's x 4 sets of 6, 60's x 12

Weighed in at 228 and change with a half decent 4 pack first thing in the morning that I noticed doing my normal routine for the past 15 years or so of flexing in the mirror when I get up, lol. Today's "cutting diet" consisted of this....

M 1: 4 whole eggs scrambled, 2 slices of toast with butter and jelly, 2 glasses of milk

M 2: Big 100 bar

M 3: 3 chilli dogs and lots of diet Dr. Pepper, lol

M 4: Ground beef mixed with Rice-a-roni and green beans like one big plate of slop, and 2-3 glasses of milk and an oatmeal cookie

M 5: Muscle Milk shake

You eat like a Fitness Queen, lardass. Nonsense I tell you...

Still catching those cleans high? My oldest son (now 9) had his first training session w/ his Oly coach. Afterwards he watched me clean and asked why I 'didn't go into a front squat'. His workout went like this:

Jumps from deep squat (full extention), High pulls, Cleans, Back Squats, Plyo jumps to 12" from deep squat and landing in deep squat, the some Push Presses.

Not a bunch of volume, but the workout lasted 1hr, and he said his legs felt heavy, and he couldn't jump out of the hole very well at the end...nice. He cleaned 13k at about 26.5k BW. It's funny, but even the coach said his form was just sick. It was a lot fo fun to watch, and this morning he was walking around w/ his chest held high for sure. Told me when I got home he did "5 sets of 5 reps on my 'firecrackers' (high pulls - the coach is teaching him to be explosive at about the mid quad, so he is making a firecraker noise as instructed...neat stuff) and then I did 10 jumps. Tomorrow I can do 5 sets of deadlifts w/ my bar. My coach said so"

Next session or so he will learn the snatch. Can't wait. I'm real proud if you can't tell.

Al, sorry I never saw your post. Right now, I am just doing the power versions caught high. I just want to keep explosive, plus cleans are probably my favorite lift of all time and I just like doing them. Last I trained squats cleans was the Spring/early Summer....it is a blast, but requires lots of dedication and some of the other lifts suffer.

Your son is learning the right way of course. I learned the squat versions first, learning the power versions 1st teaches an incorrect pull.

You should be proud, just for the love of God stop crushing up Halotestin tabs in his Frosted Mini Wheats.

Haven't posted a workout in a bit and I am not gonna back log so i will post tonight's....I ate clean for a week and got on the scale tonight at 225lbs....feeling a little too lean and light. I am gonna go eat a big meal in a bit.

Tonight

Power Cleans: warm-ups, then 10 singles at 305 with little rest between sets

Front Squat: 135x5, 225x5, 275x5, 300x3, 330x3, 340x3

Chins: bodyweight x 11-10-9

Dbell hammer curl: 60sx 3 sets of 8

Again, feel a bit too light/small at 225.....very lean though....off to eat something.

That is a really nice Power Clean. You have to be explosive to do that. What do you think your vertical is?

I can't imagine BiggT only weighing 25lbs more than me. He looks twice as large in pics! Must be cutting down nicely. Awesome work as always, gives me something to aim for :-D.

sean, don't know my vert. I'm about 6' and I could dunk a volleyball, a girl's b-ball, and shit like tennis balls etc at about 250-ish, lol. I haven't been this light in a while, if I have the chance to ever, i might try to dunk a b-ball.....I usually couldnt quite throw the b-balls through the hole.

s8n....I'm about 260 in my avatar pic.....I think 225 is as light as I wanna go though, lol.

Why do you spend so much time w/ girls athletic equiptment? Hounding the young ones?

Alright....through being a bitch. I figured out I can handle law school, and training, and a social life....it's not that hard, lol......I stepped on the scale earlier this week and was 224, I feel a little small...I seriously don't think I look at all big at this weight and I am about as lean as I'd ever really want to be anyway, so I think I'd like to coast around 235-ish.

I'll back-log.

Monday 3/12/07

Some sick workouts....since taking your advice to incorporate the jump squats (errr... shrugs...thanks cynical) into my routine the past few weeks gives me a whole new appreciation for your 495x5 top set on there..... ridiculous!

You're doin a great job of balancing everything right now, keep that up..

Are you shooting for any PR's on any lifts in the upcoming week or two?

lol, even BiggT isn't enough of a badass to get air on 495x5 squats. ;) (But watch him prove me wrong with something like 455. :eek2: )

How frequently are you planning to do deads, T? I remember you mentioning in the old journal that you're such a strong puller that the rest of your lifts go to hell if you try to push them.

You know that's funny, because I talked to him prior to starting my jump shrugs to get form tips, and I specifically asked him "should I be getting off the ground on my top sets even?" He told me he for sure gets air to 415, and might even higher but hasn't really payed attention too much as he's focusing on the weight. Crazy!

lol, you missed what I was pointing out: you typed 'jump squats' rather than 'jump shrugs.'

Jump SQUATS, lol...I've done them with 225 before and decided that it was dangerous, stupid, and not beneficial, lol.....Explosion is one area I never have to address as its never been an issue (can't say the same about triceps), but if I did, plyo, box jumps, or jump squats with maybe 95-135 would be a go.

Zgzaz....no PRs in the coming weeks. Just keep getting a little better. Just about every PR I have was set at about 260lbs....I think clean or DL PRs aren't off the radar though.

Sorry I missed your IM, I'll catch up with you though.

Been eating a bit more.....I'm gonna get lit up tonight too for St. Patty's day and probably eat whatever I feel like.

Digital scale at the gym said ERR and the Dr's scale said 116lbs, lol, so safe to asume both are out of order.

Anyway, new plan is to coast around 235......224 last week and it just looks silly for lack of a better word on my frame.

Hey thanx for the post a few days back man.... Sorry for the late reply, I appreciate the big fish looking out for us guppies in the small pond and always look for advise on ways to grow into a monster. I have been on this split that you and a few other guys helped put together for Zgzaz and Rican for about 12 weeks total 3 weeks on the new split. I have seen more gains in these last 12 weeks than I have in the last 12 months so I thank you.
