This guy speaks some solid truth about the (somewhat sad) state of gaming these days

Primarily why I'm still drawn more to the action-packed, single player games that will entertain without drawn-out, tedious bullshit. I dig MP here and there but you pretty much need to be a kid, retired or not have anything else going on in your life to stay competitive.

It's also really no wonder why the industry still doesn't get respect from the greater public when its creative potential is diluted by frag-fests year after year.

Consumers are mostly to blame since they ultimately dictate what will be made with their dollars.

Kids these days are oblivious to what makes a good game.

The games are now limited by the fact that you can only overstimulate the reticular formation in the brain by so much. Once you're maxed-out, the next bigger combination of realism and graphics won't get you any more overstimulated.

Pretty much agree with article especially about MP. I like games being longer though. And I disagree with games not being original. There's still unique concepts in gaming

I agree, but the thing is these concepts don't stand much of a chance in the face of what's popular, ie CoD shooters and casual games. I bet even sports game sales have gone down in the last decade.

The thing is, today's games are higher quality and a better deal now than they ever have been ($60 a pop ain't shit when I remember paying $80 for Turok: Seeds of Evil 15 years ago). Games are longer now in general too. Speedruns today are nearly pointless.

Lack of time is an adult gamer's biggest roadblock, and because of that it seems we try to rationalize of how "things just aren't what they used to be, so fuck it".

Aside from the current popular direction the industry is going, there is still a lot of good left. I've simply gotten a lot more selective in my gaming tastes with age.

And Mr. Plunkey, it will be a couple generations yet before things are "maxed out" so to speak. Then we will probably move onto full blown VR.

Hmmmm: I think I'll get out my Atari 400, and play Space Invaders on a 12" black & white TV!

God she makes playing Xbox Live look less appealing than shopping at Walmart.

I don't mean the technology won't get better. I mean our brains won't be much more stimulated relative to where they are now. The buzz gamers feel is the overstimulation of their reticular formation, which is why they can play for hours at a time. Then, even when they know they need a break, they find themselves drawn right back into the game.

The part of our brains that is responsible for awareness and attention get stimulated by these high framerate, highly-realistic games. The jump from pong to doom to COD was huge. But full-blown VR isn't going to pump much more info into our brains than the overstimulation we already have.

I'm not knocking the games or the technology. Think of it this way... the first time you played Doom or Quake, it gave you an intense buzz. But the buzz you're getting from Quake to CoD or CoD to the next game won't be the same increase, relatively speaking.
