FDA Concerns Spark Supplement Recall

WASHINGTON (AP) _ A product called Zen that a Florida company
sold as a dietary supplement, but which the government says
contains a dangerous and illegal drug called BD is being taken off
store shelves.
BD is chemically related to the illegal ``party drugs'' and
sleep aids GHB and GBL.
The Food and Drug Administration considers the drugs significant
health hazards, because they have been associated with at least
three deaths and 119 other serious side effects, including comas,
breathing difficulty, vomiting and seizures. They are particularly
dangerous when used with alcohol.
Science Enhancement Systems of Delray Beach, Fla., said Friday
it had agreed to recall 5,400 bottles of Zen distributed in 24
states since last April.
BD, also sold as an industrial solvent, became notorious three
years ago when more than 100 New Year's partygoers in Los Angeles
became sick after consuming drinks containing the chemical.
The FDA last year began hunting for companies that sell the
chemicals under the guise of dietary supplements in a renewed
attempt to get them off the market.
Zen is a liquid sold in 35-ounce bottles that list the
ingredient Sucol B, which is really BD, the company said. Consumers
were advised to return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
