I was just walking down the stairs at work (it's an old warehouse building) and the lights turned off as I was walking. I immediately noticed how all sounds were amplified.

Fuck, I've either reached a new level of awareness or I am officially brain dead

That's why surround sound stereo works, as long as your eyes tell your brain that the sound is coming from in front of you your ears agree. Close your eyes for a while and you'll notice the sound is coming from all around you. Same principle in the dark stairwell, without visual clues your brain hypes up your hearing so you are more accute to sound.
