XP questions.

1. I'm giving my old computer to my friend. It's got the disks & everything. Is there gonna be a problem if he has to rload windows? He'll have the key, but his IP is gonna be different.

2. On abovementioned computer, it has a nominal 20 gig hard drive. I've deleted all my shit, my wife & kid's user accounts, and emptied all the cookies, uninstalled extraneous programs etc. The only thing left is a profile I renamed for him (my old one), & a folder with some of his files, etc, about 20MB. Total space is listed at 18.5GB, free space is 8.3GB. Where the hell is the other 10 gig? I understand some will be taken up by OS & programs & his user account.

BTW I know there is a computer forum, but I'd appreciate if it was left in C&C for a bit, due to the high traffic.

rightclick on the profile directory and check the properties, should tell you the size. its probably internet cache and recycle bin.

Did you partition the drive?

Did you use a cleaner to erase the deleted information permanently?

Try searching the drive for files or programs over a certain size.

Maybe... as long as he has the cd and the cd key. But XP only has a certain number of time you can activate that copy of windows before you have to buy another copy.
No generally DSL , cable or dialup will assign you an ip address

Each user has a registry in thier profile. The file user.dat is one and the files are hidden. Also if you did not clean temprary internet file and the temp directory for that user "C:\documents and Settings\(profile)\local settings\..."
Then there would be the other space. There is a set of directories there that have junk in there

I cant move it.

I think I just found it. In folder properties there is a setting to show hidden folders. There was a temp file in there with 1600 files in it.
K to all when I can
