Xenical for weight loss

DMI

New member
Has anyone here used Xenical, manufactured by Roche. It is a prescription weight loss drug that (I believe,) blocks the absorbtion of fat to an extent in the small intestine. Any information or feedback on this drug would be appreciated!

Ok, I might have answered my own question here. I found this posted by SRD back in 2001:

"Heres how it works - forgive my smart arse again!!

Xenical aka orlistst is a pancreatic lipase inhibitor, ie it reduces the activity of the digestive enzyme lipase which breaks down emulsified fat to fatty acids and glycerol. hence less can be absorbed. if there is too much fat in the gut though you will get emulsification ++ = steatorrheoa (fat malabsorption) and fatty stool, with very bad guts!!

This is a very simple aetiological explanation - there is more to it than this.

People who use it would be losing weight anyway, but it just speeds it up. In the UK it is prescribable under certain criteria - quite strict - I am a State registered Dietitian (hence SRD!) and I work with Drs with obese patients. The evidence is overwhelming both epidemiologically and anecdotally.

Its pretty much en vogue here at the moment (in the USA too???) and the governemnt has set up protocols - see www.nice.org.uk the official website - they will have a link to Orlistst guidlines

PLease if you use it (the black markets full of it), use it correctly!

Hope this helps!"

The shit works. I know someone that lost 35lb on it in a few months. The thing is if you control the amount of fat you eat then theres not much of a need for it. If you can control your fat intake then this will stop your body from absorbing it. As for using it when bulking to minimize fat gain I am not sure how it would work. I mean if your body doesn't absorb fat then it really wouldn't be accounted for in your daily calories and you would have to eat a lot more carbs and pro. I think it only on ingested fat, so it will not do anything for preventing carbs from being stored as fat, and it will not do anything for your current body fat.

Yes it works but as the post from SRD states when in a dieting situation

Wrongun!

Xenical is somewhat beneficial particularly on diets with high fat macronutrients profile (though still low on total cals). But a diaper may be needed as your fatty stools get out of control yack.

Suppose you're talking about a 2000 calories diet
40% of which are fat , that's 800 calories from fat. Assuming the Xenical (orlistat)
will inhibit 30% lipase( which is good) we're talking about 240 calories not being absorbed. Not that much, but still for a whole month of usage that may mean 240x30 = 7200 cals total... still not a big deal.

JUNK :supercool
