i am not sure how good the games will be for the new systems but they have to be better than ps2... what are your thoughts?

should i do the swapping of systems???

ill buy which ever of them lowers their price first. im pretty sure once the game cube and x box come out, the ps2 will lower its price. its kinda pointless to buy it when it first comes out, cuz a year later its gonna be 100 dollars cheaper. besides, it seems like the ps2 is finally coming out with some good games. if i was willing to pay full price i would go for the x-box, looks like it has some really good games.

My opinion is most, if not all of the release games for both gamecube and especially xbox will be mediocre at best. Just games to basically introduce the systems. I myself would get a ps2, I sold mine last spring, but plan on getting another this fall, much better games this year than the other systems: Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 2, Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy x next year early. The gamecube will definitely have hits next year, Zelda, Metriod, etc. But for now, PS2 is definitely the way to go, trust me.

If I could only buy one I'd get GC since Nintendo says their gonna be more adult friendly. And the fact is Ninendo make some the best games ever. I would try my best to get a PS2 also. The great games are slowly but surely showing up on the system. Plus you can play your old PSX games on it and they're slightly enhanced which ain't a bad lil' bonus. X-Box may be the odd man out.

Check out PS2s fall lineup, its been reported that over 100 games are coming out by christmas!! MGS2, Smackdown3, Devil May Cry (gotten perfect reviews in all mags Ive read) Soul Reaver 2, Blood Omen 2, FF10(goddammit I want this game more than anything!!!) there are a shitload more. I just scratched the surface.

Xbox doesn't have much of a lineup, go to funcoland or something and look at all the boxes, they have everything coming otu for it on display. Nintendo will have all new Residant Evil Games, Zeld(although sequals to this series come out about once every 2-3 years and FF kicks its ass in all aspects) and of course Mario. If you are hellbent against the PS2 go with the gamecube, they have more familiar titles to work with and will have success even if Sony kicks its ass like the PS1 did to the N64. Microsoft is not a sure thing, I would wait on it to see how many games they plan on releasing within a years times and the general quality of the games that are released.

i dont know i have p s 2 and i think the one by microsoft is gona rock dont know wish one is it the box i think,, all got same names box cube brick square,, confusing ,, but for sure microsoft one ,,

Well.. I'm in the industry so I'll give ya the scoop.

Xbox will fail. It's the biggest piece of shit (dimension wise) I've seen. It looks ugly, is huge, and overheats easily. The controller is HUGE and uncomfortable.

GameCube will do well, but it'll be a while before games come out for it. It's small, cheap, and will have some wicked games in 2002.
Nice controller, nice graphics, WILL have nice games (though not at launch).

PS2 isn't as "advanced" as the above two but it's got the games and that's what matters. There are some wicked new games coming out shortly.

Market analysis has already been done and PS2 will "own" the market just because it's got a head start. It's a chicken and egg thing.. developers will need to support PS2 as a first choice since there are so many out there already. Also the PS2 looks sleek, plays DVDs (GC doesnt, and for XBox you gotta pay extra to get DVD support) and it'll play the 2000+ available PS1 games.

my [professional] $0.02

What do you do in the industry freshr? Ive always wanted to get in, but from my understanding, thats really hard to do nowadays. None of Xbox release games even appeal to me, so I definately am in agreement on that. And like I said earlier, the gamecube will have some good games, but they are far off and PS2s will have too many games, very good games at that, so it will be nearly impossible to catch up and win the video game war. Can Gamecube go online? The DVD thing will definately hurt them

Hey Austin, I'm a 3D graphics programmer, I write the engine which are used to make our games. Mainly do PS2 stuff. It's not that hard to get into if it's what you really love. Lots of people get into it cause they think games are cool (well, they are), but don't realize how much work it is to do a game. Lots of 60+ hour weeks, but it's all rewarding in my opinion. Lots of people will get burned out in 6 months or so and leave.

Xbox launch games all suck ass. It's a bunch of half baked PC ports done by PC developers who have absolutely no console experience. The Xbox will be pretty much a still born child.

GC is wicked. It's my fav system by far, but too bad the launch lineup isnt that great. It's got no DVD but Nintendo's thinking is that everyone who likes to watch DVD's will already have a player. The graphics on this system are simply amazing and the controller is perfect. The GC will be able to go online, and it has GameBoy Advanced connectivitiy which is super cool.

PS2 - what can I say? They were there first, there are millions of them out there, and every developer who wants to make money will have to support PS2. Lots of people are dropping Xbox and GC games in development to put more effort into the PS2 version.
DMC rocks, MGS2 rocks, ICO rocks, FF10 will rock ... a rockin' little system if you HAVE to have a console now.

You like ICO? I heard it was too childish, oh well. Do you know how Kessen 2 is? I really want to see some RPGs come out (not like Summoner) I like the turn based ones, although Im looking forward to Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance. Right now Im playing (and constantly dying) Pools of Radiance, that game is damn near impossible. I always wanted to do character creation/design and stuff like that, I love to draw and am pretty good at it

ICO is great. One of the most innovative games I've tried. The rendering style is superb and gameplay is awesome. You have no health, no icons on the screen or anything. All you have to do is save the princess. If the princess gets stolen by the demons you die.

Dark Alliance does look great too. Can't wait. I'm most looking forward to DMC though. PS2 will rock this fall. I love RPG's and wish I had more time to play them.

If you really like drawing, put together a portfolio and start applying! Draw lots, design lots and put yourself out there. You'll get rejected a lot, but don't let that get you down. Eventually you'll get a job in some small company and you can move your way up. That's what I did. BEST OF LUCK!

I fucking hate Sony and the way they railroaded the dreamcast. I'll never buy anything they make.

No shit, I have a dreamcast and can't even rent a game for it anymore.

Madbomber- Your a sports fan and love football so the ps2 would be best for you. They have the ea sports contract which will always make the best sports games.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is going to be released on X-Box unless it was scapped in development.

NO fault but Sega's own. They simply couldn't compete with sony, or even nintendo's software titles. They just weren't appealing/interesting enough to last, look at most of the reviews for their games, they were mostly just average, except for a very select few. Sega's best games, when compared to sony and nintendo's, were even pretty lackluster. It's good they got out of the hardware biz cuz they were really losing money. Hopefully they'll make decent games for the other systems now.

True, but its not exactly the same as ps2's exclusive version, its more of a continuation of the series in general.

muscle pump.....if sega's games sucked so much ass, why are they now all of a sudden the most sought after 3rd party developer?? Sony has been sucking their dicks to get their games on the ps2........I think you didn't play too many dreamcast games, otherwise you'd know how awesome that system was. Ps2.......flawed architecture beyond beleif, all that horsepower an not a strong enough transmission to handle it. I'm still aghast at how "ordinary" ps2 games look, ordinary as it pertains to the dreamcast. This system was supposed to make the DC look like an 8bit system, of course, we all know that was a bunch of bullshit now. That's why I will never buy a sony console ever again. They bullshitted for over a year about what this thing was going to do.....I mean BLATANT lies, showing CG demo's and passing them off as "real time". Bahh, piss on them. I've yet to see a game best shenmues graphics. Sure eventually the ps2 games will surpass what's currently on the DC (when developers finally understand the rubix cube ass backwards architecture), but that won't offset all the BS they put out. And make no mistake, it was that powerful line of BS that kept developers from making a commitment to the dreamcast. Even Konami's Hideo Kojima expressed some regret at the attention given to the ps2 before it even came out (a backhanded way of saying that they should have given more development to the DC). He also "publicly" trashed the ps2 and how it was built. Now as for the other 2 systems, any of you would be pretty stupid to go out and buy them at launch. I'm not getting sucked into any hype. And if I don't see anything worth a $299 investment, I'll wait for sega's arcade console. They're considering releasing their Naomi3 arcade board in console form, kind of like what Neo Geo did, and it will play all sega arcade games.......but they'll still be making games for other companies unless the new system takes off.

BPB, specs don't mean shit. Sony lied about the PS2 specs, sure, but in the end the games are what matter. That's why the PS1 was still selling better than the DC last christmas. I'll take ordinary game graphics over oridinary gameplay any day of the week.

That being said the DC did have some kick ass original titles. Thank God Sega is still gonna make games. That's what they were always good at. They're consoles were never #1.

They "could" have been number 1 in consoles had it not been for external influences. The only "true" console race we have ever witnessed, with no shady tactics from either side, was the genesis vs. the snes........and for the most part, genesis was number 1. During the 8bit days nintendo was threatening game companies to make games ONLY for nes, if they didn't comply they were not allowed to make "authorized" games for the NES. Any lawyer here can tell how illegal this is. During the 32bit era, we now had sony starting up the same shit, I will admit that this time around sega did not do things right. The saturn may have been more technically advanced than the ps1, but sega made some serious bonehead marketing moves, like releasing a 32 bit genesis add on less than a year before it's saturn launch. Now with the DC they once again made techinically the best system, but once again they were bullied around by the much larger company that had tremendous clout. Alot of people STILL argue that technically the DC is still a better system than the ps2. Sega has made great systems, I've owned every one except the saturn ( I will not buy any console at $400). It is truly a shame that they are out of the hardware business (at least for now), because with the exception of the saturn, they always' made the best hardware......they just had a problem marketing them correctly, and their reputation took a huge hit after the saturn. So I do hope that one day they get back in it, because they will once again come up with the best design, not just a "paper tiger" (xbox??), but a design which ensures the highest quality games at reasonable development costs so the consumer doesn't pay out his ass and the developer can make a decent living. So far every single major developer who is making games for the ps2 has announced HUGE losses. No one has turned a profit yet. If these companies see a greener pasture in the GC or xbox, sony is done.

fresh, if specs don't mean shit......why did the development community buy sony's crap hook line and sinker?? Every one of those companies could have been turnign a huge profit on the dreamcast while they ramped up development for the ps2. I will never understand why all of them threw all their eggs into sony's basket......and now they're all paying for it.

Yes we all bought into the hype. Everyone was excited about it and I think everyone was disappointed. It's got a lot of power but is extremely difficult to program (that's what I do).

Sony has brand name recognition. The PS2 would have been huge with or without specs. DC came too late to the game. Had it been 6 months to a year earlier, it'd still be around.

Developers are still making lots of money off the PS2, no worries about that :D.

Xbox WILL fail, mark my words (or this thread). GC will do well, but it's Nintendo... that means the only successful games on GC will be Nintendo titles. Exactly the same thing that happened with the N64. They suck at developer relations, though they are improving it. We'll see I guess ...

In the meanwhile I can assure you developers are making a run for the PS2 cause that's where the money is and will be. Pure and simple.

Nintendo's titles were better than the DC's? The Dreamcast was out for 2 years and has a much better library of games.

As for the PS2, Sony brainwashed all the kiddies into getting one while delivering a crappy selection of games at launch. They touted it as the next big thing, and that it'll make the DC obsolete. Look at the PS2 compared to the DC, the graphics are almost identical. Also, I don't care what anyone says I never liked the Madden series, and the NFL 2K series is much better.

fresh, namco and sega joined their arcade divisions........do you know what they're plans are for that union?? I'm expecting some new arcade hardware to be announced soon.

No idea, haven't been keeping up with arcade news. I sure hope they will make a sequel to their excellent Naomi series boards. Those kicked some massive ass. Actually, they still kick ass :)

That joint venture was the basis behind the rumors of a new sega console......that they and namco would corelease a system which was based on (for lack of a better name right now, Naomi3)and that this console would only be sold online....ie NeoGeo, and only play the arcade titles that Namco and Sega would produce. Fresh, see if you can dig something up about this......cause as of right now none of the current and upcoming systems looks appealing to me in the slightest. But a console running sega and namco games is a different story.

The xbox has the most potential, its extremely powerful, easy to develop games for and has a 10 gig harddrive and a ethernet card built in(for fast and lag free gaming). Plus it will be a better DVD player than the ps2.l

I'll ask around, but so far I haven't heard anything. And we usually get the consoles WAY before there's even any news of them. We've had GC's for a while and Xbox's too. If they are coming out with such a console, they're keeping it a tight secret. Maybe they just want japanese developer support initially and arent bothering with us North American ones. Wouldnt be the first time ...

It would be one sweet console tho. Even the Naomi2 is juiced.

Final Fantasy 10 will look light years ahead of any game on any system when its released. Mark my words on that. THe only reason the avergae game so far hasn't looked great is because its supposed to be extremely hard to program for. Once companies figure out how to use it too its potential. Dreamcast games will look 8 bit

Go with the x-box

The X-box will end up being able to play any game from any system...people will make emulators that you will be able to download to the x-box that will let you play games from other consoles.

FFX does look great. Developers are definitely starting to figure out the PS2, you'll see some awesome games.

DirtyJa - Good luck with that theory. You're not gonna EVER emulate either a PS2 or a GC on the Xbox. I guarantee it. The PS2 is too "out there" to be properly emulated, it's just too fucking weird. The GC has way more "weird" graphics features than the Xbox. No emulation is gonna happen. You might get a SNES emulator for the Xbox tho :D

Fresh, Can you be any more specific, are you saying the grafix processor is more advanced on the GC than the box or just that the games you have seen look better, different or whatever?

sega deserve whatthey got

they pissed about owners too much. it sucks for sega DC owners as its far better than the PS2 in terms of what you could get when u bought it but people just went with what they remember

they didnt even change the fukin controller....i hate playstation controllers!!!

i also look foward to the prediction about microsofts X-box taking a nose dive coming to fruitition

truly specs aside, ps2 looks soooo good in the graphics department, as far as i have seen. Gran turismo is amazing, as is most of the other games. On top of that they are all so fun, with tons to choose from

yah eh, im going to get a ps2 for devil may cry and to play ps1games, den an gamecube, den if i have any money and i hear its good i will consider an xbox.

if gamecube was out right now i'd buy it over ps2 in a second.
