Win XP tech question

I have Windows XP and every time I boot up there are a bunch of programs that automatically start. How do I turn that off?

start>run> type in 'msconfig' then hit enter

click the start up tab, uncheck unnecessary ones

A word of caution however, some are necessary for smooth operation of your OS.

Do a google on each of them to see exactly what they do if it is not specified in the command or location

It could be even easier than that. Just open Windows Explorer and go to c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and see what's in there. Delete anything you don't like the looks of. You won't need most of that crap, such as the auto-start for some Microsoft Office services, Realplayer, Quicktime, a lot of programs dump something in that folder.

when you go to tools/internet options. right on the general tab (hompage) mine is set to the one i want but if i erase it and just type www. it'll bring up a list of pretty much every site i frquent. Here and a bunch of other fitness/steroid boards. How do i erase them??? I downloaded something from downloads.com a few weeks ago that worked but is there an easier way you can do it without using a program??
