Win MX & mp3 question

Taps

New member
Whenever I get a new mp3, it ALWAYS disappears within about 2 hours to be replaced by a VBScript file. Same filename, but it's like a 12kb file. Actually, it doesn't happen with every mp3....I'd say about 2 out of three.

What's weird is as long as I have the mp3 saved on my winamp playlist, I can still listen to it. If it converts to VBScript before I can save it, then the song is essentially gone.

What the fuck?

I know a lot about computers, but I have no idea why this happens. Never had this problem with Win 98.

I hope this post makes sense...

I don't think it's a virus. My guess is that it's a way to save drive space, but it annoys the hell out of me.

Anyone else?

"This worm sends itself to email addresses in the Microsoft Outlook address book and also spreads to Internet chatrooms using mIRC. This worm overwrites files on local and remote drives, including files with the extensions .vbs, .vbe, .js, .jse, .css, .wsh, .sct, .hta, .jpg, .jpeg, .wav, .txt, .gif, .doc, .htm, .html, .xls, .ini, .bat, .com, .avi, .qt, .mpg, .mpeg, .cpp, .c, .h, .swd, .psd, .wri, .mp3, and .mp2.

The contents of most of these files are replaced with the source code of the worm, destroying the original contents. The worm also appends the .vbs extension to each of these files. For example, image.jpg becomes image.jpg.vbs. However, files with .mp2 and .mp3 extensions are merely hidden and not destroyed. Norton SystemWorks users can recover these files if NProtect is running at the time of infection."

converting files to VBScript has nothing to do with saving disk space.

Well fuck me.

Thanks a bunch. Looks like I've got some cleaning to do.
