Will leaving 225 loaded on a bar cause damage?

It's a Chinese York 1500# bar and I like to leave 225 loaded on it but then I was thinking maybe it would make it bend permanently or soemthing. It does not appear bowed at this time.

Thanks

Over extended periods it can bend the bar.........we have one just like it at the gym :)

It could happen, but not for a while. I'd make a mark on the bar just to be safe, and rotate the bar every day...

You could set it on the floor when not in use.

Or just quit being lazy and take weights off. J/K:D Like I'm really one to talk. I should post a photo of my room.

Damn, I have never even thought about this before today.
I leave 315-345 on one of my bars all week, guess I will have to stop doing that.

yeah I like having it there so I can just jump under it whenever I feel the urge....I was gonna start leaving 245, then 255, etc.

I guess if I be sure to rotate it every time I use it I can get away with it.....

You dont believe in warm up sets then?

if the bar bends is it at all dangerous?

i gots me an olympc bar thats got a noticable bend in it

The bar bending is only a real issue for things such as the OLY lifts. It would fuck up the rotation of the bar, thereby increasing the risk of joint injuries.

Also, on Deadlifts, it may make the motion off the floor a little easier, which is bad, especially if you complete in PLing.

If the bend is very significant, then it could also interfere with things like Barbell Curls.

There is bend, according to Physics, with any load placed on such a bar. Mind you, I leave my bar loaded after legs, but it's just my shitty bar. If it gets damaged, I just won't give a shit. If I did care, I'd unload it always, or rest it on the floor when loaded, as I do for the bar I use for my OLY lifts.

thanks baoh, i haven;t done olympic lifts in a while as im letting my back rehab, but the bar does have a bend in it when no weights are on it so it may be worth buying a few extra :)

Yes, if you have already sustained an injury (it doesn't have to be related), I would definitely look into a new bar for when you return to OLY lifts.

Happy healing.

I once used a slightly bent bar when trying to bench 190. Rolled in my hands halfway down.........could have been messy.

Hell yes it is. I've almost had a fully loaded bar roll off my traps because the it was bent and when I backed it off the rack, it instantly tried to roll to its "natural" position.

Also, I use a suicide grip for close-grip bench press so if the bar is warped and rolls off my palms with 345, I'm fucked.

I always check a bar for warps before I use it.

this may explain why the bar feels like it rolls so much, it always rolls when on the rack....

time for a new bar(s) soon!

hmmm........

I have two things going for me:

I don't plan to ever keep more than 315 on there and

I have a very wide power rack where the collars are maybe 2 inches outside the hooks when the bar is centered.

I guess I have to weigh the convenience of having the weight on there against the possibility of it bending noticeably.

ah fuck it I like te convenience and fun of having the weight there to fuck around with.

I understand where you're coming from- noone wants to fuck up something they just dropped some coin on, but with a wide rack and a quality bar like you have, I don't think you need to worry about it. Think how much a barbell in a gym gets used. They're loaded and/or being lifted for a good part of the day, and even then they typically don't warp unless some hoss is loading them up with six plates or more and doing an exercise where the force is being exerted towards the middle of the bar (close-grip bench, squats, shrugs, etc.). I think you're right- leaving 225 loaded up and on a wide rack will be just fine. :)

What's the most number of standard 45# plates you can fit on the ends of a standard barbell, and still have room for collars?

My guesstimate is 8 plates on each side.

I watched a buddy do a couple decent shrugs with 9 plates on each side the other day. It fit, but was getting close to the end. He's bent one or two bars at the gym and the owner is starting to get a little irritated, I think. :D

the owner has to get better bars then!

LOL. Maybe so, but these ones run him $200 apiece as it is. I can pull 500+ for reps on deadlifts and they only curve gently, then spring right back when I let go.
