WHY? not before instead of after

OMEGA

New member
on the crumcake style diets, and low carb diets it seems that carbs are placed after a workout

my question is why not before?

our goal on those types of diets is to be in a stage of glycogen depletion in order to recruit maximum fat....so it makes more sense to have carbs before a workout to fuel your activity...and then for the remainder of the day your body would have to use fat....... for sustained energy.

if you have carbs after you would have a tank of energy "reserves" so to speak through out the day...so fat will not get tapped.

also if you have no carbs before your workout. how will you get that ball breaking intensity...... esp with no eca's.........

just curiuos?

Blood can only hold about 20g of glucose for a normal person. This means that excess carbohydrate is stored as either glycogen or fat. After exercise, glucose transport enzymes are present on muscle cells. This shuttles most ingested carbohydrate into muscle glycogen instead of liver glycogen. By doing it this way, you are guaranteed to fill muscle glycogen, putting your muscles into an anabolic state after your workout. Also, there is no insulin rush during the workout if you take it after your workout. This way, it's almost like you never had the carbs, but your glycogen is still replenished.

I probably isn't really very consequential whether you take the carbs before or after the workout.

I would take carbs afterwards because It is easier to maintain energy levels this way for me.

Oh, didn't see that...
well, maybe eating carbs beforehand has a purpose because weight-training uses mainly glycogen... this way there would be less gluconeogenesis and you might have better performance. You're right.

However, I feel like my muscle glycogen is not depleted during the day even on no carbs. Weight-training is what does it. Also, if you take the carbs before the workout, more will go to liver glycogen. You want it to go to MUSCLE glycogen, which is what will happen if you take it post-workout.

Personally, I like to have some carbs before and after working out. Not much, just something so I don't get hungry while lifting. A bit of oatmeal and whey is what I usually have before my workout. Something thats easy and quick to digest.

just got back from work.and was thinking about this issue

which really is not an issue because if I or you choose to do a diet like this it would not matter that much because there are so few carbs in the diet to begin with

I am thinking personally plain oatmeal (small bowl) before a workout....... and after just one piece of fruit with a pure protien based supplement

thanks for the quality responses guys

Once you condition your mind that your carb addiction is mental then there is no limit to the Great body you can have. I honestly think all carbs are SHIT. Oatmeal is good because it is natural, Veggies with fiber and Phytochemicals are good, but If you are eating a good amount of fats you dont need any carbs pre workout. I do 1hr of cardio at 8am, then I have 4 eggs, and 1 1/2 Scoops of whey. Then I either goto class, or chill for an hour or so and go to the gym, Im full of energy 4 eggs has rougly 20grams of fat, and it keeps me going. If you need energy get some ECA. But remember when insulin is present Fat burning is not. The carbs post workout are to help the muscles refill muscle glycogen and prepare them for the next time you train. You use your fat as the main energy source, protein to keep muscle, its that simple. Take veggies as you like, or get a good fiber supplement. I mean if you cant go 8 weeks without having one carb meal a day then You need a reality check,

Its all in your MIND.......

Actually, I am going to go out on a limb and say that on Crumb's diet, almost NO carbs should be eaten pre-workout. This is because I'm sure there is a ton of gluconeogenesis all the time and it is not necessary.

Maybe you could try a little glycerol before and during your workout to hydrate your blood and thus your muscles. Not sure if it can easily be metabolized by type 2 muscle fibers during weight-training, but it seems likely.

Also, remember that most of the calories of glycerol will end up as blood glucose (w/o too much insulin being secreted). This is similar to gluconeogenesis from protein.

vicotr what do u eat then...? how many calories and whats your breakdown of your nutrients...? are you against carbs altoghther whether bulikgn or cutting... or are you just specifically refering no carbs for crums diet?
