Why is it that everyone whose finished college says its worthless, but everyone without a college degree thinks they need a degree to amount to anything?
Im in college and I need concrete reasons not to go because its quite discouraging to hear its worthless.

interesting point.

Ok if by college you mean university well dude go for it .... unless you're a freak like Paul Allen, Bill Gates or Micheal Dell... you need a degree in something to one day reach your goals and have some hope.... Yes I know people without a degree who're making good money but I'm not sure they'll be making this forever. One day they'll hit the peak...while your peak with a degree will probably be higher.

If you own your business, then you don't need one. If you work ion the corporate environment you do, it will help get your foot in the door. WHat you do beyond that point is up to you. A college degree is not a guarantee that you will succeed, that part is up to yourself, your drive, your determination, your tenacity

For what you want to do, Dave, you need that degree. 'Nuff said! :)

Shit, Jim, Dallas is as hot as hell too! :redhot: Let's go schwimmin'!!! :)

When you gonna to drive your happy ass up to Dallas and party with the cool people? :D

I KNOW!!!! I come up there every now and then, I have family in Carrollton (where I am from). That idea sounds good....I think I am going to hit the pool tonight!!! Thank God I have AC....:p

Most people use college/univ as a social half-way thing. They didnt get shit out of it b/c they missed half the classes were drunk or hungover for the other half. The degree itself from a four year will do little for you - used to be different 1 generation ago, but now you really need an MBA or something extra to get where your going. "Worhtless" is BS in my eyes - I went to a nice university in So Cal. We learned business theories that would literally be useless (almost) in 3-4 years, so basically that was "worthless" but its not about learning something to use it, its about HOW TO LEARN so you can come up with your own answers in the real word. Do you need to go to college to be succesfull and/or happy: No, does it help: yes.

People can take your house, they can take you car, your stereo-----but no one can ever take your education away from you.

Get it while you can, if you don't you'll later regret it.

SuperDave,

Just like everything else, college is whatever you make of it. A lot depends on which major you choose and how you apply yourself afterwards.

MP5 got a degree in finance. He's working as a bank teller. He wants to be a taxidermist or something else that connects with his love of hunting and the outdoors. Of course he's not happy because he didn't choose a major that agreed with his personality. That doesn't mean the same is going to happen to you.

That said, I'm changing careers after several years in public accounting. I'm studying something now I really enjoy, court reporting. Why I studied business and accounting is beyond me. It never appealed to me. I just thought I would make a lot of money. Thank God I got fired and I've had to start over.

Just continue with your studies and best of luck to you. Remember, your career is a marathon, not a sprint.

My dad spent a total of 0 semesters in college. Some people have a strange concept of "amounting to anything."

4 years in college are 4 years of wasted opportunity.

dude

the grass is always greener on the otherside. Everybody has an idea of what life should be like and were they should fit into it, but reality often makes question ourselves. the truth is, if your in college now, you made a decision awhile back to go there. Dont second guess a choice you made, instead understand that ultimately that choice will always appear a bad one and always be second guessed, but it was your choice, lifes a series of choices my friend.

Sometimes it depends on the field you're going into. I'm working a job that has nothing to do with my degree. However, part of the reason that I got the job over other people was that I had a diploma and the other people didn't. Some companies look at a degree as evidence that you have a brain. I don't regret going to college.

You have to enjoy and love what ever it is that you decide to do for a career. Degree or no degree, if you regret the path you have chosen then how can you expect to succeed. It's not the degree that will make the money it's you and what you do with the knowledge that counts. This is why over 68% of graduates do not enter the workforce in there field of study.

Degrees in general can get you in a door or over a level in a company that you would other wise not get past with out one. However, way to many people get a degree in a field that they do not even care for yet they do it based on the assumption of automatically making a lot of money.

Also in today's career market the most important attributes come from job experience and continuing education. Jobs have become so specialized and competition has become so aggressive and fast paced that if you don't continue to educate yourself, you'll stop moving up the latter so to speak.

I (like May) am making a career change now b/c I am at the point in my life were I want to do something that I enjoy and love first, and if the money comes than I will welcome it, but money is not the drive behind what I wish to do.

So if your going to get a degree, do it a field that you have a passion for not to get rich quick. Money is the biggest misconception behind attaining a degree.

Dave,

College is one of the great American scames. Kinda like insurance. I didn't bang this one because I have posted this topic to death.

I can;t tell you what is right or worng. I can only share my story:

I have a degree in mathematics.

My senior year I lived with 4 other guys. we all graduated and are all employed. I am working in the tech sector, alongside non-college grads.

Each of the people I work with makes more money than all of my roommates combined. No one cares about my degree.

Tech is funny like that. Not sure you will see the same opportunity elsewhere. So you can either play the game and get a degree, or attempt to rewrite the rules for yourself.

each choice is equally valid.

if you get a degreee it had better be in engineering, computers, or business, or you can get a degree in english, socialogy, history, and be good looking and blond and marry rich

you can get the same education by buying the books and reading them yourself....why listen to some liberal pot smocker put his spin on things..he is teaching because he couldn't make it in the corporate world..most profs lectures are completely outdated.

its actually the exact opposite. morons who didnt go to college love to brag about their $12 per hour mechanic jobs while the college boy is paying thousands in tuition. in the long run college always wins.

You ever listen to the majority of students in school?

They're always talking about getting a job that has nothing to do with what they are majoring in school. The ones that do hold a job hate it and are doing just what they hate to do in the first place, yet when they look for another job to replace it, it's worse.

There's so much lack of effort and creativity from people these days. No set goals, most don't have a clue as to what they want yet they waist thousands of dollars to hang out for four or more years.

Consider the source and listen to some of these students talk next time. You'll be surprised.

A degree is worth it. It just depends on what you're willing to do with it.

Don't make me laugh. Since when does a college degree equal an education? I do not yet have my college degree, but I consider myself more educated than numerous individuals who do have college degrees (such as some of my professors) - and I've demonstrated so.

An education is not what one obtains because of his experiences in college... an education is what one obtains IN SPITE of his experiences in college.

Doesn't May1010 have like 30 degrees? Funny how he's studying to be a court reporter.

The benefits of formal education, folks... education at its finest.

I'm in college for 2 and only 2 reasons:

1) To make mom and dad happy.
2) It's free.
2 P.S.) I actually get paid to go.

If not for that, I'd probably be busy with my own business or a high paying job right now. Oh well... I've still got roughly 100-120 years to accomplish my goals.

You can get a decent job without a univeristy degree, but you'll probably find (as I did) that eventually you'll hit a ceiling in terms of money and advancement.

If you don't really care about what you do for a living; if you're happy just getting by -- then collage/university may not be for you. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Personally, I hate being limited in my career choices due to a lack of formal education. Hence I'm going back to school to finish a double degree in commerce and computer information systems.

Maybe take some time off and figure out what's right for you. There's not much point in studying something you hate...

Warik you make a good point with May's situation.

Taps you and I think alike (scary.) =)

True the fact that you can be successful with out a degree. It's proven everyday. But the reason the majority of those in school probably do not succeed is because of two factors: 1) The lack of work related experience in the field of study in which is being pursued. 2) The lack of interest in field of study which is chosen by the student.

A college degree does not make you any smarter or better than one without. It does demonstrate that you can set a long term goal, work toward it and achieve it. Hopefully you will learn some shit along the way. I have five degrees (including a law degree and two masters) and am working on my 6th (a phd). All of those and .99 will get you a big mac. My education opened doors for me. It was up to me to walk in and do something. I obviously could not do what I do (I'm a Dist. Atty.) without some of the degrees. the others just kinda happened while searching for something I enjoyed doing. the degree I am working on now will allow me to do something else (teach) in the future. All in all, I think college is a great asset.

Listen man, get your degree and enjoy the experience. If you can, go without working---I am a full time student and I work 35 hours a week and it sucks. It is quite a bit more enjoyable if you dont work and just devote all of your time to your studies and the college life.

Play some intermurals and drink some beer. If you pick up something along the way that interest you, then study hard and become the best at it.

Like someone else here said, a degree will get you in doors---thats all. But in many cases, that is quite a bit.

I dont like it, but that is the way it is.

Trust me when you get it and you are out in the real world you will understand! And if you don't get it you will understand also! But untill then it will be a conspiracy to you!
