Why is there so much homosexuality on TV?

Every show seems to have a gay character. Why is this a requirement? I can't think of a show that I regularly watch where homosexuality hasn't been a main point of at least one episode. Why? Is the whole world turning gay?

I saw a show on cable the other night called "The L Word". This was the most ridiculous show I've ever seen (however, the frequent nudity from Mia Kirshner kept me entertained). It's about a bunch of lesbos in Hollywood. Every character in the show is gay. Even the straight characters are really gay "but just don't know it yet".

Gays don't really bother me much any more. I'm just sick of hearing about it. Can't the TV execs just shut up about it? It's getting to be irritating just like a major news story that's being overdone. You know, how OJ Simpson was on the news 24 hours a day and it got so bad that there were psychiatrists talking about Nicole's dog suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. The same thing seems to be happening with gays. Just be gay and shut up about it.

OK, that's great. Why do a lot of new shows play off of this for a straight audience? For acceptance? There are better ways to go about it. It can't be for entertainement. Will and Grace is probably the worst show on television. All of the gay sexual innuendos are funnny once, maybe twice. But it gets a little played out over a few years. Although I think Queer Eye is funny as hell.
