why is my new computer so slow?

AAP

Plat Hero
Platinum
I have XP on it, but I have over 1G of DDRAM and the processor is 1.8.

How can I get this to run faster? Any help is appreciated, thanks guys. I mean... this shit is slow as hell just opening MS WORD or the Program Menu.

yeh, disable your antivirus, and also go to run program and type in "msconfig" go to the startup icon and it will show you all the programs your computer is starting at startup, these continually run in the background, if you don't need the program there, take the check out and restart. A LOT of shit it started uselessly on new computers, such as registration reminders

No, I just got all that memory because I wasn't charged. The thing is... I downloaded DOOM off Kazaa last night and it was INCREDIBLY SLOW. Slower than my apps. I just - literally - watched it move one pixel at a time.

Enabled I have:

WorkUFind
iTouch
EM_EXEC
navapw32
Dragdiag
dpps2
NetDot~1
msmsgs
wtm
Digital Line Detect

I have no clue what those up there are.

The ones I Disabled were:

Direct CD
RealPlay
Kazaa
American Online Tray Icon (I use bellsouth Dsl)
MS WOrks Calender Reminder
WinZip Quick Pick

That is all that is listed.

Help?

What is probably happening is your processor is overheating. Dude your co. gave you a shitty Dell. Hot processors make things go slow. If you can shoot some AC on the box do so and let me know the results.

No wonder its slow with all that shit loading.
Disable the most off.
navapw32 is the Norton.

disabling the tracy icon of something is different than actually making sure it isn't running.

also, check out this page:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
while the dude in the corner looks cheesy - if you do the shit he has on that page (turning off uneeded services) then you can make it a bit better.

if you have a Dell, then I doubt your processor is overheated unless the fan on the processor is busted or fell off... same thing.
they do a good job of cooling it.
if that were really the issue, you should be able to take a small house fan and blow it on the computer with the computer's fan off and see a big difference.
(also there is also likely a temperature output of what your cpu is running at somewhere in the bios - there are programs you can download for free that can access that info from your computer via the OS (if the motherboard supports it).

if you go to the taskbar and right click, then select "Task Manager" there are a few bars at the top.
One will show you network activity.
One will show you how much ram you are using.
One will show you have much of the CPU you are using.
Look at all those and tell us what those readins are.

If the CPU or RAM reading is high (over 50%), then go to the list of all the processes running and it will show you what each service is using as far RAM and processor time. Look to see what is using the most.

How new is the computer? if it is not that new and you have been downloading a bunch of shit off of kazaa and then throwing it out, you might have a fragmented disk that is slowing it down.

Other than that, I can't tell you more without knowing more about your system and what you are doing.

You should get paid for all the tech support...That, or a hand job.

On NEW COMPUTERS they preload a whores load of bullshit that I remove when I buy new machines with preloaded garbage (work). RegEdit works great, if you can't find it I can email it. MSConfig I'm not sure if that even comes on XP, you can downoad it off the MS site if not. "Tech In A Box" and that kinda crap, remove it. KaZaA if loaded will slow things down periodically, look for anything using alot of RAM or CPU time and there is your answer.

I had the same problem with a new dell, I assume it was a pentium 4??

I've heard some of the P4 chips had some kind of trouble communicating with the motherboard.

I just sent mine back, never figured out what it was.

on a sort-of related note, what app is 'kernell32'?? every time my computer is going slow/screwy, this is running

This is the main reason it is slow.
But hey, you can't delete it. :)

wait, is OS operating system? i still have no idea what interfacing means.

LoL yep... This is how the OS talks to the hardware, yep the operating system.

It is a Pentium 4 and I got it last week. Here is the stats from teh Task Manager Menu

I'm running an AMD Athlon XP 2100+ w/ over 1G of DDR Ram. I have mad shit at load up about 14 different things. My computer doesn't slow down a bit. AMD's are great Pentiums are highly over rated in my opinion.

I would send that shit back. A computer with those specs shouldn't be fazed by all types of apps running in the background. You can't run Doom? C'mon now.

Something is definitely wrong. Even with all those apps running at the same time, you shouldn't be getting such a drop in performance. A pentium 4 should not be running Doom at 1 frame per second. Since its been like this right out of the box, its sounds like they screwed something up when putting it together. I'd try and send it back, and get them to fix it, or better yet get a new system.

Yeah, I always get AMD chips, their way cheaper. You can build a AMD system for half the price of a pentium one.

sounds like the clock multiplier was maybe set incorrectly or that the fan either broke or fell off. the new pentiums will sense if they are running too hot and then back way off on performance to allow it to still operate.

I would just look into getting it replaced by dell - if it is new it will all be covered.
just make sure to back up anything important and then anything that is... not something you want seen, delete off the drive (they won't go looking too hard, so you can just toss it in the trash and empty that).

as for the comment that AMD is "more efficient" than Intel - not so much.
Intel costs more, but is more elegant. AMD uses more power, and runs hotter - mainly because they throw more transistors at the issue.
AMDs can't be overclocked very reliably since they already run so hot, but Intels can because they are well engineered.

That said, in terms of bang for the buck - the AMD is the way to go if you have the choice. You don't get all the newest high tech things like DDR RAM - but for normal applications, you don't really need it.
Their 64-bit Hammer will support it though - and that will be a well engineered chip that might actually give Intel's 64-bit chip a run for its money.

Happy brings up a good point. If you are sending the computer back, I'd clean up your hard drive. I'm sure you don't have anything illegal on it, but you never can tell what you pick up by accident when surfing the web. I know Tawnee Stone is supposed to be 18, but she sure as hell doesn't look it. Safest thing would be to use the back up CD that comes with the computer.

...I have DDR ram...I really don't see why you would want to overclock a 1.74 Ghz processor...just doesn't make sense. If you need to over clock it, then you're better off getting a new processor, most of us aren't using our computer for computer animation or anything. For the everyday user AMD's are the best in my opinion.

very true, I just wish more companys(if your not building one from scratch) gave you an option to get an AMD processor.

Yeah, one day AMD will take over the world lol. Bro, go to www.accessmicro.com they'll build you exactly what you want, they're not as expensive as dell or gateway. (most ppl go through them)

That looks like a pretty good site, I like to build my own, I always use www.pricewatch.com , you can build your own for about 1/4(if even that) of the cost of buying a prebuilt computer. Providing you have the know how.

I might go through them (www.accessmicro.com) when I get my next laptop.

5-12% CPU useage doing "NOTHING" is bullshit, you have a bunch of preloaded crap dragging you down. Thats not a TON of CPU use, but my stuff runs 0-1% ALL DAY LONG, AMD 1800+ (got it for free from AMD :) ). Any computer you buy from a manufacturer needs to be STERILIZED when you get it.

Good point from Haz, I swear I've heard of someone getting busted when sending thier computer in and them finding child porn on there.

PIV is an ok system, but MHz for MHz is a POS compared to the PIII, I buy AMD because I hate getting bent over the table.

Pricewatch is great but your not going to build a $250 ubercomputer unless you get a shitty motherboard, shitty PSU, shitty case, shitty RAM, shitty video card, etc etc

Computer pricing now is very competitive, it isn't like it was 3-4 years ago. When you can get a computer for $599 thats decent, your not going to do the same thing on your own for 25% of the cost. You DO however get to pick your parts, and hopefully save some cash.

I have no porn on my PC. All the kazaa shit I download is on another server that I access. It never reaches my hard drive.

You forget this is Anal Assplorer we are talking about here...not the most likely candidate to have Tawnee Stone on his hard drive. Tony Stone, perhaps, but not Tawnee.

True, but I mean when you recycle alot of parts that you don't need to buy, ie case, power supply, ram(unless your upgrading to DDRAM)hard drive, floppy,cd-rom/burner/DVD-rom, monitor etc etc.

You can do that to some extent yes, but after awhile the parts get so old that THEY are slow. When I moved from one computer to another, you lose ISA slots after awhile, ISA is slow anyway. Sure I moved my CDR over, but 2x burn gets old after a few years. Plus coming from one OEM machine to another, probably doesn't have the greatest parts to begin with, and there is a good chance most of the sound card/video etc may be embedded on the motherboard.

If you aren't upgrading to DDR SDRAM today, then your getting an OLD ass machine. Hard drive? Same thing, why stick with an old 4,500/5,400 RPM drive when you can have better, not to mention DMA 33/66, old school! :)
